Anne Arundel County MD Decoy Seminar October 6-8th 2008
We have a Police K9 Decoy seminar upcoming on October 6-8th 2008 hosted by the Anne Arundel Police Department.

The seminar will be a working seminar and participants will learn:

·          Decoy as an instrument of operant conditioning.

·          Alert on passive suspects with no equipment

·          Bringing out civil aggression.

·          Drive channeling

·          Eliminate equipment orientation in any dog.

·          Proper sleeve mechanics: sleeves don't create equipment orientation, decoys do.

·          Proper Bite suit targeting and "catch" mechanics.

·          Proper use of hidden sleeves and muzzle fighting.

·          Explanation of decoy technique for training and maintaining control commands: out, guarding, hold & bark, redirects, and call-off (recalls).

·          Integrating fundamentals into police K9 training scenarios.

If you would like more information or to register for this seminar, or arrange one for your agency, please contact Jerry Bradshaw at malinois_jb@mindspring.com and we can send you a contact form and a registration inflrmation.

Dont forget, check the website for other events upcoming: Decoy Seminar Kingsport TN, CATS School December 2008, and Terry Fleck's Legal Update March 2009.

PSA East Regional Championship

Is being held in the Baltimore area this coming weekend at Severn Covenant Church Field in Severn MD. The address is 20 Gambrills Road, Severn MD 21144.

I would love to see more interaction between the Police K9 trainers and handlers and PSA. PSA is all about scenario training, and I think you would be surprised and impressed to see what your civilian counterparts are doing with their dogs.

All three levels of PSA will be represented this weekend. Highlights should be: The level 1 courage test. Our entry level courage test is as hard or harder than any other similar exercise in any other K9 sport. Our courage test is long, fast, and our decoys drive the dogs with a clatter stick like you have never seen before in a suit sport.

Our level 2 and 3 obedience involves decoy distractions embedded in the obedience routine like in no other sport. Level 3 is all surprise scenarios in both obedience and protection. If you want to read the rules, go to the official PSA website at www.psak9.org and check it out. If you want more info on the East Regionals, or the PSA Nationals coming up on the 25th and 26th of October in Cookeville TN, contact Jerry Bradshaw at malinois_jb@mindspring.com

HITS 2009 Police Dog Conference

Louisville KY, April 20-23

Tarheel Canine will be represented at the 2009 HITS conference. Jerry Bradshaw will be speaking at the conference on the topic of "The Power of Reward." His talk will incorporate video evidence to show how to structure reward into your training to achieve goals of greater precision and increased independence and reliability in your training.

This talk will come on the heels of a 3 part article series written by Jerry that is scheduled to appear in Police K9 Magazine starting in January 2009 on "The Power of Reward." The three part article series will cover reward and how to use it to achieve high level results in obedience, building searches, and control training (outs, recalls).

Tarheel Canine will also have a booth and information available on green and trained dogs for sale, and K9 instructor courses available to law enforcement. Come and see our new line of T-Shirts for K9 enthusiasts.

If you haven't yet subscribed to police K9 Magazine, you can click on www.policek9magazine.com and subscribe. Follow the links to the information on the HITS conference as well, you will be glad you attended! The conference has seminars, workshops, K9 related vendors, and a demo day for K9 vendors to show dogs to prospective buyers from police agencies.

Book CoverBook: Controlled Aggression in Theory & Practice

This training manual was written for police K9 professionals and covers basic foundation training such as testing green K9 prospects for patrol suitability, training drive development, drive channeling, working in the bite suit, human orientation (combatting equipment orientation). The book further features key skills training including training guarding behavior, out on command, redirected bites and the out and return, and the best way to train a call off with little to no pressure on the dog. If you have trouble with the recall (call-off) exercise being reliable, the information alone on training the call off in a new and different way is worth the price of the book hands down.

Published copies now available at a reduced price through September. Pre-Orders are running about 2 weeks behind, and will ship on September 15, 2008.

Our Price: $ 20.00

New Program!

In Service Training Groups from Tarheel Canine

Good in-service training is hard to come by for small agencies. In the fall of 2008 Tarheel Canine Training will address this problem and will host in-service training groups in your neighborhood (Baltimore-Washington Metro, Eastern Tennessee-Western North Carolina,  North Georgia, Southeastern Pennsylvania). The training will be scheduled in four Quarterly blocks of 2-3 days of training each quarter.

TK9 trainers will travel to these locations and conduct in service training in detection (both narcotics & explosives), patrol, trailing, and scenario based problems to challenge your K9 teams. Annual recertification will be held during one of the quarterly in-service sessions.

Benefits: Your agency will save on travel expenses (gas, hotel, meals) for training and annual recert by joining or setting up an in service group near you!

The price for the in-service training will be only $750 per team per year! We will require a total of 8-10 teams per area from all participating agencies. So even if you are a one man K9 unit, call today to get involved, and keep your training at the highest level possible. You owe it to your dog, and your community to be the best you can be!

You do not need to have a Tarheel Canine trained dog to participate in the in-service program. We welcome any and all in-service teams to participate in this program.
