2011-12 Annual Fund Challenge

The Piedmont College fiscal year runs from July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012, and we will again be issuing a decade challenge. With each gift, regardless of the amount, you will count as a donor in your decade of graduation. The decade that gets the most donors will be declared the winner at the end of the fiscal year. The 1950s took home the crown last year in a close race, and you can help your decade win this year!

Internship Lunch

Piedmont's QEP will hold a lunch on Internships Tuesday, November 1, 2011, to connect students with alumni who have participated in internships.

"We want to introduce our current students to the possibilities and benefits of internships," says Teresa Secules, director of QEP. "Alumni who have either participated in internships or who work with interns in their respective careers are the perfect people to make that point in an authentic way." The luncheon will be held in Brookside Dining Hall. If you are interested in participating, please contact QEP at [email protected] to volunteer.

Career Preparation

In other efforts to better serve our students and alumni, Piedmont has begun a concentrated focus on career preparation. Over the past two years, we have offered Career Days with workshops and consultations by faculty and alumni. This year, we intend to expand this emphasis.

Individual sessions will be held throughout the school year at both campuses. Planned workshops include: Sizing up Your Strengths, Marketing Yourself, Interview Skills, Resume Writing, Dress for Success, What Not to Do, Mock Interviews, and Negotiating Your Salary. A Career Expo, complete with outside employers and internship possibilities, will culminate the series in spring semester. All workshops and the Expo are open to alumni. We welcome you as either a presenter or a participant. If you are interested in becoming part of Piedmont's movement toward career readiness, contact [email protected] for details on how to participate or volunteer.

Art has a new home in northeast Georgia

The opening of the Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art at Piedmont College marks a new era for the study and appreciation of fine art in northeast Georgia.

That was the unanimous impression of some 200 guests, including Gov. Nathan Deal, his wife, Sandra, and three past and present Piedmont presidents, who attended a gala reception at the museum on Friday, Sept. 23.

It was a first chance for most to get a look at the museum, which has been under construction in Demorest for more than a year.

Mason, Boettcher, Scharfenstein

The museum began with a gift

of some 117 paintings and sculptures by Piedmont alum Dr. Bill Mason and Bob Scharfenstein, both of Birmingham, Ala. With so large a collection, the college realized it would need a new space to do it justice.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon.-Sat.

Fall sports off to impressive start

Lions logo

The Piedmont College fall athletic teams have gotten off to impressive starts in 2011. The PC Volleyball team is red hot to begin the season as they sit at 14-3 and a perfect 2-0 mark in GSAC play. They are led by defensive specialist Paige Eslinger, who recently set a school record with 42 digs against local rival Brenau and in the process collected her 1,000th career dig. The team is looking to defend their 2010 GSAC title and has five key conference tests upcoming in October.

The Women's Soccer team is also off to a great start, the best in school history as they are currently unbeaten, sitting at 10-0-1, and 2-0 in conference play. The team's wins have been even more impressive as they have outscored their opponents 48-3 to date, and are set for five conference contests in October.

 Women's Soccer_2011

The Men's and Women's Cross Country teams have competed at three races this fall, and under the direction of first-year head coach Charlie Patterson both squads have been successful. The women won the North Georgia Tech Invitational and finished 8th of 13 and 3rd of 8 in their other two races. The Men have finished 2nd of 6, 10 of 15 and 3 of 6 on the year.

The Men's and Women's Golf teams had strong showings at the 6th Annual Piedmont College Fall Invitational. The women set a school scoring record and finished the event in 2nd place of the 9 schools entered, while the men finished 3rd in the event. Recently both squads captured Georgia Mountains Trophy titles.

The Men's Soccer team is 3-5 on the young season, and opened conference play with a win at rival LaGrange. They stand at 1-0 in conference play with two GSAC games remaining.

Athens Campus Update

Athens gals

Piedmont College Athens Campus students have jumped started the year with some fun activities. During the Back to School Luau and Student Life Fair held September 1st, over 100 students learned about on-campus student organizations and ways to volunteer in the community. They feasted on free hamburgers, hotdogs, snacks and desserts. To honor Patriot Day and September 11th, 2001, students shared their memories and thoughts surrounding their experiences 10 years earlier. These memories and thoughts were written on the Patriot Day Memory Wall in the student center. QEP sponsored an Open Mic and Gallery event on September 22nd, in which many students displayed artwork and shared their own written word. On September 25th, students took a trip to the mountains of Tennessee and participated in the Athens Campus Student Life funded White Water Rafting trip, a three and half hour expedition down the Ocoee River. And as the first session classes finished up, students participated in a Movie Night on October 5th with the showing of the new Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
