WOW! Recipe of the Month

WOW! Tobacco Tale

Thursday, Nov 18.
Celebrate by making a positive healthy lifestyle change.

November is a good time to think about quitting. The weather is getting cold. More places are going smoke-free and it isn't always pleasant to go outside to smoke. Maybe it's time to think about giving yourself and your family the gift of a life without tobacco. Click here to learn more.

Flu Vaccine FAQ

As the 2010-2011 flu season approaches, it's once again time for flu vaccination.

This year, the CDC advises just about everyone to get the vaccine. That raises questions. So does the inclusion of the H1N1 pandemic swine flu vaccine in the seasonal vaccine.

To answer the questions, WebMD spoke with flu expert William Atkinson, MD, MPH, of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. Click here to read more.

Did You Know Your Baby Can Catch a Cavity?

FTFTMaineHealth's From the First Tooth program wants you to know about a new service that will help your child's mouth and teeth stay healthy.

If you do not have a regular dentist yet, the next time you take your child  to the doctor's office for a checkup, ask the provider to look at your child's teeth.  The  healthcare provider will "brush" a little fluoride on your child's teeth. Fluoride is safe and helps stop cavities.

MaineHealth employee health benefits cover fluoride treatment by medical providers for children twice a year up to the age of 42 months.

A healthy mouth allows healthy eating, healthy speaking, healthy learning, healthy growing and a healthy mind.

Raising Readers Celebrates 10 Years!
For November, Raising Readers recommends A Visitor for Bear by Bonney Beck, Illustrated by Katy MacDonald Denton.
Cheery persistence wears down a curmudgeonly bear in a wry comedy of manners that ends in a most unlikely friendship. Bear is quite sure he doesn't like visitors. He even has a sign. So when a mouse taps on his door one day, Bear tells him to leave. But when Bear goes to the cupboard to get a bowl, there is the mouse - small and gray and bright-eyed. In this slapstick tale that begs to be read aloud, all Bear wants is to eat his breakfast in peace, but the mouse - who keeps popping up in the most unexpected places - just won't go away! Age range 3 to 6.

Providing Care for an Older Parent or Relative~Lifebalance Can Help

Whether you're concerned about an older relative who lives far away, or providing daily care for an aging parent who lives nearby, or simply thinking about the future, LifeBalance offers resources and support.

Call to speak with a consultant who can help you:

  • Assess your older relative's situation.
  • Understand the physical or mental health issues your older relative may be facing.
  • Find support if you are caregiving from a distance.
  • Select and evaluate support services and living arrangements.
  • Stay strong and take care of yourself.

Listen to our CD, Sharing and Caring, which features advice from author and therapist Mary Pipher on caring for an older or dependent loved one. You can also read or download helpful life articles like these:

For Managers and Supervisors:

Nearly 60 percent of caregivers work full time. And two-thirds of those employees need to make adjustments in their daily work routines to meet caregiving responsibilities. It's likely you are managing individuals who are facing caregiving challenges. You may even be caring for an older relative yourself along with your many other work demands.

As a manager, the more support you are able to offer employees who are caring for an older or dependent relative, the more productive your team will be. Contact a consultant today for advice and information on how to recognize when an employee could use support with a caregiving challenge, and how to best offer that support.

You can also read or download these helpful articles:

Also be sure to sign up for our monthly newsletters for managers. The newsletters feature timely articles every month on such topics as identifying employees who are under stress, managing effectively with fewer resources, and boosting energy and resilience. If you're not already a subscriber, sign up for the Managing People newsletter today. In our Managing People newsletter this month, you'll also find a helpful article titled "Caregiving Tips for Managers".
