MMC Security Takes on Weight Loss as Team Builder |
In January, Steve Hobart (senior manager security, parking and outside services), Steve Rand and Cory Stone from Security Services teamed up to form a "Biggest-Loser" style program for their department.
More than 50% of the employees in that department participated and were able to lose more 223 lbs. Steve Rand was the biggest loser, losing 17.68 percent of his body weight, and Judy Ridge, also from Security Services coming in a close second and Dan Dupuis in third place. Cory Stone, a personal trainer, provided weekly nutrition and exercise tips tips to help keep the group motivated and informed.
To continue their success, many of the team are now participating in the MMC WOW! Fit for Life 12-week weight-loss challenge. |
Are Pale Fruits and Veggies Less Nutritious? |
Eat a Rainbow of Colors!
Is it true that pale fruits and vegetables aren't as beneficial as brightly colored ones? Do bananas, white peaches, white nectarines, cauliflower, cabbage, garlic, mushrooms, onions, etc., really offer you and your family little benefits? Of course not! All the fruit and veggie color groups have different compositions that vary in vitamin and mineral content, and all offer health benefits.
Let's take a look at some of those "pale" veggies. Cauliflower is full of antioxidants, vitamin C and folate. Cabbage is chock-full of vitamins A, B, C and K, as well as calcium, iron and fiber. And potatoes? Potatoes are high in vitamin C and potassium.
Bottom line? Not one fruit, vegetable or color is more nutritious or beneficial than another. So, eat a rainbow of colors for better health! |

Western Maine Health Farmers Market a Success |
A Friday Farmer's Market has kicked off at Stephens Memorial Hospital. The market will be in the parking lot next to the Human Resources Building on Winter St. in Norway - across from Amato's on Friday afternoon from 12 pm - 4 pm.
Jessica Paradis, from the Oxford Hills Food Collaborative will bring a wide variety of food from local and statewide farms. Each week the market will feature a "guest exhibitor" with local products to sell. The first week, Cindy from Meadow Ridge Perennial Farm was on hand. Both remarked that the first market was very successful.
The Collaborative is working in cooperation with Healthy Oxford Hills and The Progress Center to bring healthy, local food to the Oxford Hills.
Roberta Metivier, Vice President of Human Resources for Western Maine Health stated that, "The farmers market being held at SMH is in support of our MaineHealth WOW! Works on Wellness initiative for employee wellness. Having the farmers market right on site is great incentive for the employees to shop local and eat healthy."
At the SMH Farmer's Market there is a wide array of food - from greens and carrots, to soaps, oils, meats, eggs, cheeses, bread, tomatoes, potatoes, and plants.
