| Greetings from the MaineHealth WOW! Team! |
|
Welcome to March!
We at the WOW! Program hope that you are enjoying the final few weeks of winter. As we mention in the 2009 WOW! Calendar, March is National Nutrition Month--and home to St. Patrick's Day. Our feature recipe honors the Irish in all of us with colorful cabbage. This cancer-preventing cruciferous vegetable is high in Vitamin C, fiber and many other nutrients. Try our Winter Confetti Slaw with Walnuts today! March is also host to National Sleep Awareness week (March 1-8). Feeling tired? You're not alone: According to the National Institutes of Health, 50 to 70 million Americans are affected by chronic sleep disorders and intermittent sleep problems that can significantly diminish health, alertness and safety. Untreated sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes and other chronic diseases.
For more information on sleep issues, read "Breaking Free of the Drowsy Crowd" or visit the National Sleep Foundation website. Stress can be a significant sleep interrupter. This spring, the MaineHealth Learning Resource Centers (LRC) is offering a six-week course entitled "Getting Beyond Stress: New Skills to Enhance Your Work & Personal Life," beginning on April 28. The course is normally $50, but for this session only, your WOW! Rebate can be used for MaineHealth system employees who sign up before April 10th. No pre-payment required. Call the LRC at 1-866-609-5183 to reserve your spot.
The LRC is also offering free classes on "Lowering the Cost of Your Medications" on April 14. Contact them at the number above for more information. Poor sleep can also be caused by medical issues such as heart problems and obesity. Are you at risk? MaineHealth members with health insurance can visit their providers for many preventive screenings without paying co-insurance. Your regular office visit co-pay will apply. Getting these screenings is one of the requirements for WOW! Rewards, and "Superhero" status. For more information, visit www.mainehealth.org/wow. Don't forget to sign up for March into May! This free ten-week program allows individuals to set exercise goals and offers weekly tips on increasing activity. Get motivated to "March" by reading about the Let's Go! program. Finally, for late breaking WOW! news, become a "Fan" of the MaineHealth Works on Wellness (WOW!) Facebook page. Or catch up with WOW! e-news and recipes by visiting our archive page. Happy March! Lisa Belisle, MD, MPH Medical Advisor, MaineHealth WOW!
