October 2008
Greetings from the MaineHealth Works on Wellness Team!

Welcome to October! We at the MaineHealth WOW! (Works on Wellness) Program hope you are enjoying the beauty of Maine's breathtaking fall foliage.  Have you embarked on an apple picking adventure? If so, set aside some of this body-friendly fruit and try the Triple Apple-Almond Crumble recipe at the end of this email.

On a more serious note, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. ApplesBreast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women (after lung cancer).  The American Cancer Society advises women to get a mammogram every 1-2 years beginning at age 40 and yearly after age 50.  National Mammography Day is October 17 this year. Schedule your mammogram today!

Breast cancer also impacts men: more than 2,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.  Men with suspicious breast lumps, dimpling or discharge should contact their health care provider.  For more information about breast cancer visit: www.nbcam.org.

Want to minimize your risk of developing cancer? Be sure to eat well and maintain a healthy weight.  Visit the Center for Disease Control's new comprehensive healthy weight website at www.mainehealth.org/wow.

RECIPE: Triple Apple-Almond Crumble Apples

Filling
  • 1/3 cup apple 'butter' (un-sweetend apple spread - Try Tap 'N Apple spread, available at Hannaford and other local stores)
  • 6 Cortland or Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored & sliced thinly
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider, warmed
  • Optional: ¼ cup raisins or dried cranberries
 Topping
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups rolled oats (not instant)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • Optional: ¼ cup slivered almonds
Combine warmed cider and apple butter in a medium bowl.  Add apples (and raisins/cranberries, if desired).  Gently toss to blend ingredients. Place filling in a 9 x 12 baking pan. Combine topping ingredients.  Spread topping over apple filling.  Press down into a 'crust.' Cover with foil and cook at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Uncover and cook for 15-25 minutes more.  Apples should be tender and topping crisp and golden. Serve warm. Top with fat-free frozen vanilla yogurt or ice cream, if desired.
