DEPRESSION: More common and treatable than you may think
by Gordon Clark, MD, Chief Executive & Medical Officer, Integrated Behavioral Healthcare, Scarborough (a MaineHealth practice)
With a 17% lifetime prevalence, depression is a common illness. No one is immune -- people of all ages, races, and economic circumstances can be affected.
It can also be severely disabling. In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that depression was the 4th leading cause of disability worldwide and would become the 2nd leading cause by 2020.

Ambivalence about quitting smoking is normal. Many smokers know they should quit and want to quit but they also like what they perceive as enjoyment or benefits from smoking. This feeling two ways about something is a very common experience and unfortunately, ambivalence can cause people to get "stuck" in their current behaviors. Quitting is made more difficult sometimes by the fact that some smokers aren't sure if they are ready to quit or are worried they won't be able to quit.
