Have you ever tried paddling a canoe upstream? It's pretty difficult. Likewise, it can be hard to deal with health issues once they have become well established. As we discuss in "Prevention: It's as Easy as 1-2-3" (April WOW! Newsletter), it's much simpler to try to prevent these problems from happening in the first place (primary prevention), or at the very least, find them early (secondary prevention).
Cancer is a prime target for both primary and secondary prevention: it is the second leading cause of death worldwide. April is National Cancer Control Month. We at WOW! encourage you to focus on both primary and secondary cancer prevention this month--and every month of the year by:
Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, beans & whole grains and low in fat, red meat & processed foods. Learn more through the FREE MaineHealth Learning Resource Center/Hannaford Series "Food for Thought: Your Guide to Good Health." Register by calling 1.866.609.5183.
Want more "cancer control" tips? See the WOW! Calendar.
For other prevention-oriented ideas, see April's Enlightened Living column (click on In Good Health at www.themaineswitch.com), courtesy of the MaineHealth Learning Resource Centers.
This April, let's take advantage of National Cancer Control Month and get our canoes pointed in the right direction!

Patients with cancer and their families often find themselves faced with significant emotional, physical and financial concerns. These don't have to be faced alone. MaineHealth employees who are dealing with cancer-related issues can get help through the LifeBalance Employee Assistance Program. For more information, visit: www.mainehealth.org/wow.

2008 Heart Walk

Please join your colleagues on Sunday, May 18th for the 2008 Heart Walk. The festivities begin around 9:15 with the walk commencing at 9:30am from Payson Park on Back Cove. The Heart Walk helps raises funds and awareness of heart disease, stroke and heart defects. Dollars raised help fund lifesaving research and provides education to our entire community. This unique event blends the benefits of physical activity, community involvement and personal giving. The non-competitive walk accomplishes four goals:
1. Celebrate survivors of heart disease and stroke
2. Encourage walking and physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle
3. Educate the public about the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and stroke
4. Raise money for cardiovascular research, education and outreach programs
Cardiovascular disease remains our #1 killer of men and the #1 killer of women over 25. Stroke remains our #3 killer and the top disabler. You can make a difference by raising funds and stepping out on May 18th for the Southern Maine Heart Walk.
