National Nutrition Month Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month, and a time to take inventory of our dietary habits.

For some people, eating can be a struggle. According to the American Dietetic Association (www.eatright.org), "between 5 million and 10 million women, and 1 million boys and men struggle with eating disorders in the United States." Eating disorders, such as bulimia, anorexia and binge eating, can worsen with stress and eventually lead to serious health problems.

According to the National Institutes of Mental Health, a person with anorexia may

  • Eat only 'safe' foods, usually those low in calories and fat
  • Have odd rituals, such as cutting food into small pieces
  • Spend more time playing with food than eating it
  • Cook meals for others without eating
  • Engage in compulsive exercising
  • Dress in layers to hide weight loss
  • Spend less time with family and friends, become more isolated, withdrawn and secretive.

A person with bulimia may

  • Become very secretive about food, spend a lot of time thinking about and planning the next binge
  • Take repeated trips to the bathroom, particularly after eating
  • Steal food or hoard it in strange places
  • Engage in compulsive exercising.

If you suspect a friend or family member has an eating disorder, contact your health care provider. Another resource? The Life Balance Program at

MIM LogoMarch Into May

March into May is a FREE, community based motivational program, designed to help participants "GET MORE OUT OF LIFE" by improving their health through increased physical activity.

March into May is a great way for people to get active, be healthy, and have fun doing it! The program has been successfully providing the tools and resources people need to set and achieve their physical activity goals since 1998.

MIM is based on the Stages of Change. This means we realize that your fitness levels and interests in being physically active are different than other peoples. Because the program considers your different wants and needs, it helps you start at a place that's right for you and then moves you forward from there. Plus you don't need any fancy gym equipment or special gadgets.  You just do what you love to do.  This means anyone can participate and be successful!

The 2008 program will start March 17 and wrap up May 23.
