ART BASEL 2009 PROGRAMMING
|
BAC Announces the Programming Lineup for Art Basel 2009
12.03.09-12.06.09
The BAC's 33,000 square foot facility will transform
itself into bāc:23 from December 3-6 2009 to coincide with Art
Basel and it's various satellite fairs. The name bāc:23 is derived from the
number of years the Bakehouse Art Complex has had it roots in the Wynwood Arts
District and has been serving the community as the premiere institution for the
visual arts in Miami.
Featuring the artwork
and studios of over 70 local Miami artists, BAC encourages guests to visit the
studios & speak with the resident artists. All artwork in the studios are for sale
directly from the artists themselves. This is the only fair in town that guests
can get a first-hand look at the artistic process while finding out the story
behind a particular piece. The BAC will be open every day from 10-6pm with
breakfast served daily. Start your Basel day off with coffee and baked goods at
the BAC, free parking available!
"Connected
To Global Consciousness" Hugo Patao In addition to the 70 artist studios, the Bakehouse Art
Complex also houses 2 separate exhibition galleries. In its 2,600 square foot
Main Gallery, BAC artists confront the idea of the overwhelming sensory
qualities of Art Basel in Sensory
Overload. Based on the traditional five senses, touch, hear, see, smell, and taste, BAC artists cross and blend these senses
together to create an experience of a sequence of synesthetic encounters,
attacking one sense and at the same time evoking another. "The Beauty of the Uncommon Tool" Tony Chirinos
The BAC presents a small works exhibition 5X7 in its Swenson Gallery. All of the
works measure 5"X7" or 7"X5". The show will consist of a variety of media, from
painting, drawing, sculpture, fiber art and on. There is sure to be something
to please every aesthetic. Patrons are
encouraged to purchase these small, unique works of art at $100.00 each. When a
guest purchases a piece from this exhibition, a photo will be taken of them and
their new purchase. The picture will then be hung on the wall in place of the
piece, thus becoming part of the exhibition. Take home a piece of art from Art Basel without killing your wallet!

MIAMI'S SPAM ALLSTARS TO PERFORM 11/28/09!
DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic
elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create
what they call an electronic descarga. It's not a known
genre. It's hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But
as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers,
and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show -- they know
something very special is going on.
Primary Flight is a collaborative curatorial organization
dedicated to the production of site-specific, street level, mural
installations.
Since its inception in 2007, Primary Flight has brought
together over 100 of the world's most influential Street Artists to install
their bodies of work live in the streets of Wynwood. These projects provide a
catalyst for burgeoning arts communities. Primary Flight has selected the BAC historic flour silos as one of their locations for this year's project!
Stop by the BAC anytime during Art Basel and watch the silos transform into a work of art!
The Bakehouse will be open from 10-6 daily from 12.03.09-12.06.09

BAC NEWS

BAC Lights Up Historic Landmark!
Completely air-conditioned, weatherproofed and freshly
painted, the Bakehouse Art Complex quietly, yet proudly is standing tall in the
South Florida arts community. With new signage and lighting, there should
be no mistake as to what this facility is and where it is going. Embracing its past by revealing its historic
signage and art deco features, has clearly helped shape the identity and
character of this unique arts facility.
The BAC has operated for 23 years in the American Bakeries Company
complex which dates back to the 1920's and '30's.
The signature flour silos which stand 35 ft tall, are
notable and distinct... and now more so than ever. Lit with crisp blue neon at their tops by
renowned lighting artist Jim Morrison, the historic silos can be seen from I-95
serving as a bright beacon to the Wynwood Arts District.
Utilizing light in site specific installations, Jim creates
a multi-dimensional connectivity between architecture, its surrounding
environment and the community. He is
most recognized for his gateway to Miami
Beach installation at the Julia Tuttle Causeway - the
neon rings on the palm trees. In
addition, his artistry can be seen on the sidewalks of Las Olas Boulevard,
MDC's Medical Center Campus, and the Onyx, a high-end condominium located at NE 26th Street
along Biscayne Bay.
"As an artist working with light as a medium and associated
with the Bakehouse since 1997, I was
thrilled to be a part of its long overdue rejuvenation. Its neon haloed silos now punctuate the skyline and serve as a beacon to the Wynwood
community of artists and its visitors."
- Jim Morrison
