The circumstances and details of personal and family history fade as those who know the stories pass away or lose their recollections. As precious as these stories are to us, we often procrastinate about saving them until it is too late.

How Do You Know When It's Time?

Senior Starburst

Convincing your parents that it is time to move out of their home and into a senior living community that can provide the supportive services that they need can be a very challenging and often difficult task.

Your parents are living at home and are adamant about staying there, but the problems at home have escalated and you have become concerned about much more than the frequent repetition of stories or questions.

Of course, safety is a primary concern and the following will provide you with some measurement tools that may be a helpful gauge to determine how compromised your loved one's safety is:

·       Medication compliance -- Your parent is having trouble with medication compliance.  When filling the weekly pill box no longer works, there are other measures you can try, such as an automatic medication dispenser, but if that still isn't working, you need to be concerned.  The mismanagement of medications can lead to much greater problems including the start of the cycle of hospitalization, rehab, home.

·       Frequent falling or unexplained bruises -- Your parent my not want to tell you when or how often they are falling, because you will use that as "evidence" against them or they may not even remember falling.  However, the seriousness of falls cannot be ignored.  As we age, our bones become more brittle and these frequent falls can result in fractures.  Hip fractures are one of the top 10 reasons for hospitalization for patients 80 and older.

·       Forgetting to eat or drink --  Malnutrition, dehydration and urinary tract infections are some of the top reasons for hospitalizations in  patients 80 and older.

·       Isolation -- Increased socialization is one of the great benefits of moving a loved one into a senior living community.  Although your parent doesn't think they need increased socialization, there are all kinds of studies that indicate the socialization leads to increased brain health. In a recent study conducted by Rush University Medical Center, researchers discovered that seniors who had a constricted life space were almost twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease as seniors whose life space extended well beyond the home.

·       You are continually being called for emergencies or missing work.

·       Frequent hospitalizations -- If your parents' health is so fragile and they can't stay out of the hospitalization cycle, it may be time to consider a move.

Moving a loved one into a senior living community or an assisted living facility can provide the medical assistance, structure and companionship that you know is missing in your mom or dad's life.  It will also allow the adult children peace of mind in knowing that their loved one will be taken care of and the number of frantic phone calls and emergencies will be reduced so that everyone's lives can resume a more ordinary, less frenzied pace. Preserve the time that you spend with your loved one for quality time. It's a difficult decision and not one to be taken lightly; but it may be time.

May Gardening Tips

 Senior Starburst

Gardening in Central Florida is different than in other places, even other parts of Florida. Central Florida's climate is a bit milder than that of North Florida, but frosts and freezes can occur during the winter (especially the latest three winters) and the summers tend to be hot and frequently dry.

May usually signals the beginning of Florida's rainy season, although it is not at all unusual for May to be as dry as March and April some years. In May, the prevailing wind direction is from the east-southeast, which brings moisture-laden air. On average we can expect to receive nearly seven inches of rain in May, with daily highs around 85º and lows above 70º.

Along with the warmer and wetter weather come insects. But be careful with pesticides. Over use of insecticides can alter the natural balance of your garden. Pests can build up resistance to the poison and become less controllable, while predators and pollinators you want to encourage can become weaker and decline.

May is also the time when several flowering trees and shrubs in your Florida garden are at their best. Tabebuia, Bougainvillea, Wisteria, Tibouchina, Golden shower Tree, Yellow Poinciana and Crape Myrtle all thrive in May.

Pruning of many plants is best scheduled for May, including trees whose weak boughs can be a threat in the upcoming hurricane season. It's also the time to prune spring-flowering shrubs. When well watered (and fertilized, if needed) after pruning, plants will bounce back, producing dense, bushy growth within a few weeks.

May is the best month for planting most trees, shrubs and vines, but it's best to wait for the first rainy spell to thouroughly wet the soil. Even so, continued watering, as needed, is key in case the rains fail to soak your area.

You can still plant a vegetable, herb, or annual garden this year.

Your best bets for vegetables include Tomatoes, Collards, Mustard, Spinach, Lima and Snap Beans, Malabar and New Zealand Spinach, Okra, Southern Peas, Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Turnips, and Yams.

Best herb selections are Basil, Chives, Dill, Sage, Savory, Marjoram, Mint, and Thyme.

Good annual choices will include Begonias, Blue Daze, Celosia, Coleus, Cockscomb, Hollyhocks, Impatiens, Marigolds, Moon Vine, Morning glory, Periwinkles, Petunias, Portulacas, Purslane, Salvia, Sunflowers, Zinnias.

Bulb choices include Achimenes, Agapanthus, Blood Lillies, Caladiums, Canna Lillies, Daylilies, Gladioli, Gloriosa Lillies, Spider Lillies and Rain Lillies.
