January is National Get Organized(SM) Month |
|

January is the time when we make resolutions. What do we want to change in the next year? What do we want to make better? For one in five of us, that resolution is to get more organized. And rightfully so. Being organized actually helps us save time and reduces stress in our lives. No more lost minutes looking for something, no more stress trying to find a child's homework before rushing out the door in the morning. By being organized you'll know right where everything is. A favorite adage is "A place for everything and everything in its place."
Once you've organized your space, you can keep it organized by setting a schedule to clean up areas of your home. That may mean 15 minutes every day or dedicating a weekend each month. You need to determine what works best for your schedule and find something you know you can commit to.
It's also helpful to enlist the help of all household members to maintain the space. Everyone contributes to the clutter; therefore, they should help with the upkeep. This holds everyone accountable for his or her things as well.
And don't forget to reward yourself (and family members)! Once you complete the maintenance of an area (and remember to remain focused and complete one area before moving to another), reward yourself with something special whether it's a favorite dessert, watching your favorite television program, or game night with the family.
Finally, if you determine you just don't have time to keep everything organized, consider hiring help. While the initial investment for cleaning services, gardeners, or professional organizers may be off-putting, what you save in time and stress by having an orderly home may be worth it.
The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) helps you achieve your New Year's organization resolution by sponsoring Get Organized Month (SM) each January to raise awareness of the benefits of getting organized and hiring a professional organizer. Some Organizing Hints From AYS: |
|
ü Determine what time of day you are most productive and tackle your most intense or difficult tasks then.
ü Set deadlines for your tasks - it gives you something to work toward.
ü Put things away in their proper place as soon as you are finished using them.
ü Request to be removed from junk mail lists at
ü www.the-dma.org/consumers/offmailinglist
ü Create project files and keep all paperwork pertaining to that project together.
ü Have a place for everything. Keep all bills together, all scrapbooking supplies in one place, etc.
ü Keep a notepad handy to write down your to-dos. Don't rely on your memory!
ü Set mini-goals and reward yourself for successes.
ü Save your easiest tasks for the end of the day. You'll be able to complete them and end each day on a positive, rewarding note.
