A Message from the President
The Greater Chapel Hill Association of REALTORS® in collaboration with the Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce, The Chapel Hill Carrboro Schools, The Orange County Schools, the Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce, Orange County Democrats and Justice United endorse the ¼ cent sales tax referendum on the November ballot.
Why do we support the sales tax?
- It will help minimize the continual pressure to raise property taxes. If this does not pass, we are looking at a 4 cent property tax increase next year.
- The sales tax will not be on food or medicine.
- The sales tax allows Orange County to collect revenue from visitors to our area.
- The state has just reduced the sales tax 1%.
- The money collected will be dedicated for the next 10 years allocating:
- 50% to capital improvements on older schools in both school districts shared evenly on a per pupil basis.
- The other 50% will be dedicated to economic development. Currently Orange County generates only 18% from the commercial tax base.
- The money will not go in the general fund nor will the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) lower their current ratio of spending on schools.

The BOCC has created a steering committee on which we have a representative. We will send you updates as we get closer to the election which you are encouraged to share with your customers.
Sincerely,
On behalf of the Greater Chapel Hill Association of REALTORS® Board of Directors |
