Celebrate African American Month by finding out what events are going on in your community. Google your city, state and "African American History Month" or visit the government website: African American History Month. Some ways you can show your interest is to profile a different historical figure every week in your lobby (some profiles available on the website above) or offer to volunteer to read a children's biography in a local school. By the way -- we have work to do when it comes to properly securing the futures of our African American and Hispanic neighbors. Only 54 percent of African-Americans and 32 percent of Hispanics have IRAs or 401k plans, compared with 72 percent of general market users, a recent survey shows. Just 33 percent of African-Americans and 18 percent of Hispanics own either individuals stocks or bonds, or shares in mutual funds versus 60 percent of general market consumers. Certificates of deposits attract 25 percent of African-Americans, 24 percent of Hispanics, and 36 percent of all customers." Be the agency, company or individual who leads this charge in your community!
