Dear Call it Out, Vote it Out, Live it Out,
Congratulations for taking part in what will no doubt be remembered as one of
the greatest historical events of our time! No matter which way you voted
yesterday, we can all join together and rejoice in the giant leap forward we
took in our quest to become a racially reconciled democracy.
Yesterday, Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States and the first African-American
President of the United
States. This
is truly a remarkable moment in our nation's turbulent history and we can all
be joyful in the light of this breakthrough.
Over the past weeks we have called out the importance of addressing
issues of poverty as followers of Christ and we voted our convictions as
we pulled levers, touched screens, and scanned ballots for all levels of our
government. Yet our work has only begun.
Our elected officials face a world and a nation with many serious
issues. They face a difficult time ahead of them, a time fraught with
temptation, corruption, and tribulation. It is our responsibility as
followers of Christ to support and pray for our elected officials to be wise
and discerning, steadfast and righteous as they move forward leading this
nation. Likewise, it is our responsibility as citizens of our nation and city
to let our elected officials know what we expect of them. We must live
out our values by keeping them accountable to their promises and advocate
in partnership with those typically pushed to the margins.
Over the months ahead we at NY Faith & Justice will provide you with
opportunities to live it out. We will engage our elected
officials and each other in areas of justice for the poor. Please begin
this journey by clicking this link and signing a letter to President-Elect Obama drafted by our
friends and partners at Sojourners. Let him know where
YOU stand on issues of poverty and justice.
Thank you for your heart for the poor and willingness to walk with us as we
seek to do justice and love mercy as active Christians and citizens of the
Kingdom.
Here another great way to start living it out this week. Don't miss it!
