Jerry O'Sullivan

Jerry O'Sullivan is considered by many to be America's premier uilleann piper. His reputation for technical and melodic mastery of the Irish bagpipe known for its subtlety and expression, is unsurpassed in the United States, and is demanding considerable attention overseas. Jerry is also widely recorded on the tin whistle, the low whistle, the Highland Pipes and the Scottish smallpipes. He has appeared on more than 90 albums and has performed or recorded with artists such as The Boston Pops, Paul Winter, James Galway, Dolly Parton, The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, The Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Eileen Ivers, and many others.  Denis Brooks

A Seattleite by birth, Denis Brooks started playing the mouth-blown Warpipes (or Highland Pipes) as a teenager, but soon transitioned to the Uilleann Pipes and quickly became an expert. After moving from Seattle to California in the late 70's, he and a few others started the San Francisco Irish Pipers' Club. When he returned to Seattle in 1980, he organized the Seattle Irish Pipers' Club and soon had students who were inspired by his mastery of the pipes. Soon fiddlers, guitar players, flutists, and concertina players started to join him and other uilleann pipers for sessions around Seattle and Irish music became very popular in the area. With relentless effort Denis kept the Pipers' Club momentum moving forward, but unfortunately for Seattle, he moved to Ireland in the late 80's. Still living in Ireland today, he is renowned for his piping skills and continues to perform and is a frequent honored guest at major piping events. Click the photo to see Denis playing the pipes!

Leo McNamara

Leo McNamara hails from Scariff, an area in the eastern part of Co. Clare that is steeped in Irish traditional music. He started playing tin whistle when he was six years old, moved on to the flute at ten, and grew up knowing and playing with such great musicians as P.J. Hayes, Paddy Canny, Martin Woods, Martin Rochford, Peadar O'Loughlin, Christy Barry, and Martin Hayes. He is the flute player with the All-Star Clare Céili Band and teaches flute & whistle. Click the photo for more information.

About the Uilleann Pipes

Uilleann Pipes

Uilleann pipes are the characteristic national bagpipe of Ireland. The bag is inflated with bellows strapped around the waist and the right arm. These pipes are distinguished by their sweet tone and wide range of notes - the chanter has a range of two full octaves, including sharps and flats - together with the unique blend of chanter, drones, and "regulators." The regulators are equipped with closed keys which can be opened by the piper's wrist action enabling the piper to play simple chords, giving a rhythmic and harmonic accompaniment as needed. Click HERE for more detailed information on the differences between the Uilleann Pipes and the Warpipes (or Highland Bagpipes).
