SHAMROCK FEST

St. Anne Parish holds its 1st Annual family-friendly Shamrock Fest on Saturday, March 13, in Banchero Hall, 101 W. Lee St, Seattle, All proceeds go to the operating budget of St. Anne Parish and some great Irish music and dancing has been lined up to entertain. IRISH WEEK PROCLAMATION LUNCHEON

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and other dignitaries will be in attendance to issue City, State and County Proclamations of Irish Week 2010. Among the special guests will be the St. Patrick's Day Parade Grand Marshal Desmond Guinness, the Honorary Grand Marshals Leo & Carol Costello, and Galway Mayor Declan McDonnell. GREEN STRIPE LAYING

 7 pm, on 4th Ave from Jefferson to Westlake Park

This is a mini-Parade to mark the route of the St. Patrick's Day Parade down the center of 4th Ave, starting from Jefferson St at 7 pm. A large crowd participates by climbing on board the flat-bed Truck or the Hales double-decker bus at McRory's at 6:30 pm, and children are very welcome. There is no charge to participate! IRISH REELS FILM FESTIVAL

The Hon. Desmond Guinness, founder of the Irish Georgian Society, will present a lecture about his efforts to preserve Ireland's architectural heritage. The lecture will serve as an introduction to the showing of the Irish Georgian Society's film "Saving Our Heritage, The Irish Georgian Society". IRISH FESTIVAL, Seattle Center

Saturday & Sunday Noon - 6 pm

Wednesday 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

The Festival features non-stop Irish music, singing and dancing with booths selling Irish and Celtic products, Irish workshops, lectures, cultural displays, children's contests and activities, Irish Language, Genealogy and History Workshops, Art Exhibits and more. Family-oriented activities include wonderful Irish Musicians along with the Champion Irish Stepdancers from around the Pacific Northwest. Events for children include the "Smilingest Irish Eyes Contest" and the "Most Irish-Looking Face Contest", and a Children's Activities Center, including building a LEGO copy of the White House. Contemporary Irish short films will be screened during our Irish Reels Film Festival and several DeLorean automobiles will be exhibited outside Center House from 2-4 pm both days. Admission to all activities on all the days of the Festival is FREE and stage performances only on Wednesday. IRISH FLAG-RAISING
NATIONAL ANTHEMS

The Parade Grand Marshals and other dignitaries raise the Irish Tricolor in front of the King-County Administration Bldg, followed by buglers playing the Irish and US National Anthems.

 

ST PATRICK'S DAY PARADE

 12:30 pm, starts from 4th Ave and Jefferson

The Parade travels north on 4th Ave from Jefferson to the reviewing stand at Westlake. Parade closing ceremonies are in Center House at the Seattle Center at approx. 2:30 pm. While all marching groups must pre-register, anybody with an Irish connection (and everybody is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!) is invited to walk in the Parade without any pre-registration. Seniors and others who can't walk the distance are welcome to ride in the Hale's Ales "Seniors Shamrock Shuttle", the double-decker bus which is free and leaves from McRory's at 11:30 am. A Catholic Mass in a non-Catholic Church, Catholics and others praying in a Protestant Church for Peace. Seattle's Archbishop Alex Brunett is the main celebrant and the homilist is the Seattle area's Senior Irish-born priest, Fr. Bill Treacy from Camp Brotherhood near Mount Vernon. Irish facts to keep you warm!

In the nearly 150 years since the The US Congressional Medal of Honor was created, thirty-three different countries are listed as the birthplace of medal recipients. Other than the USA, Ireland is the country of birth for the largest number of medal winners with 258 Irish natives awarded the medal. That is more than twice the number awarded the natives of any other single country.
Of the 258 Irishmen who have been awarded the medal, 19 were born in Co. Cork, the largest number from any one county in Ireland.
