Cry of the Dreamer Concert

CRY OF THE DREAMER

CONCERT
THIS SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 7:30 PM, UW'S KANE HALL

Irish musician
Seán Tyrrell tells through music and song the amazing story of Irish poet and patriot, John Boyle O'Reilly, 1844-1890. Reportedly John F Kennedy's favorite poet, O'Reilly's best known poem is The Cry of the Dreamer. Tyrrell effortlessly traces O'Reilly's journey from early childhood in Ireland, through the Famine years, the Fenian Rising, his being sentenced to penal servitude in Australia, his escape to the USA, and his speech in Seattle in 1889. The story is tied together with jigs, reels, a march, and a few slow airs. Tickets are $20 - purchase Tickets ONLINE in advance, or pay at the door - Rm 210 Kane Hall, Seattle's UW.

SEÁN TYRRELL - Seán has been surrounded by music all his life, coming from a family immersed in the musical traditions of his native Galway. During the sixties he honed his vocal and instrumental skills while rubbing shoulders with a host of celebrated artists in Ireland, New York and San Francisco before returning to Ireland in the late seventies. He has toured Ireland, England, the Continent, the US and Australia, and regularly tours both as a solo act and with a supporting band. To hear a sample of Sean playing and singing, visit YouTube.

NEWS FROM IRELAND

LAST HURRAH! -

Ireland's Bertie Ahern and Northern Ireland's Ian Paisley will formally open a new $40 million Battle of the Boyne visitor site in Co. Meath before both leaders step down next month. Paisley resigns after participating in a US-Northern Ireland investment conference on May 9, while Ahern steps down on May 6, after his return from addressing the Joint US Houses of Congress in Washington on April 30.

FINUCANE INQUIRY - The British government will not now hold an inquiry into the 1989 murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane because the Finucane family refuses to accept the rules governing the inquiry. Finucane was killed by loyalists acting in collusion with British Army and British Intelligence Service agents, but the family believes the proposed inquiry would not be sufficiently independent of British government control.

PEACE TRIP - The leaders of Ireland's four main Christian churches - Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian - together visit the Holy Land next week to bring a message of peace from the churches in Ireland. There they will meet local church leaders and representatives from the Palestinian Authority and Israeli Government.

NEW ARMS - The Genealogical Society of Ireland suggests that maybe it's time for the United Kingdom to redesign its Royal Arms to remove the Arms of Ireland. The current Royal Arms feature the Arms of England in the 1st and 3rd quarters, the Arms of Scotland in the 2nd and the Arms of Ireland in the 4th quarter. The Royal Arms have not been changed since 1801 after the Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland.

"THE PRIESTS" - Three Irish Catholic priests this week signed a recording contract with Epic Records (Britney Spears label!) which will invest almost $2 million promoting the singing act to be known as The Priests. NURSERY RHYMES - The Irish government will mail a copy of the book Humpty Dumpty and other Rhymes to every baby born in Ireland in 2008 to highlight the importance of early reading. The mailing will include a short note in English, Irish, Polish and French outlining how best to read to a baby.

BANNED - Ireland has banned the Manhunt 2 video game because of its "gross, unrelenting and gratuitous violence". Anyone buying the game online or importing it from another country commits a criminal offense. Manhunt 2 is the only video game banned in Ireland.

FIRST FLIGHT - 80 years ago on April 12, 1928, an Irish Free State Army Captain and two German aviators became the first to cross the Atlantic Westbound in a non-stop fixed-wing aircraft flight. They took off from Dublin on April 12th, narrowly dodging a stray sheep on the runway, and landed 36 1/2 hours later on a frozen lake on the Gulf of St Lawrence, Quebec.
