Greetings!

July is berry month. Native strawberries have started to ripen with raspberries and blueberries soon to follow. During the month of July we'll be harvesting more of our traditional native vegetables including sweet peas and green beans.

Though we have planted over 50 acres with fruits and vegtables there is one crop planted in a speacial location that is not destined for the dinner table. In Mechanic Falls on Rt. 26 is our 7 acre corn field. This corn is extra special because it's the home to our fall corn maze attraction. To introduce folks to our newest farm on Rt. 26 we're going to celebrate with a human size puzzle! This isn't any 'ole corn maze, it's a Maize Quest corn maze. Maize Quest is the leader in designing interactive corn mazes. It's top notch farm entertainment and fun for all ages.

This year's theme is Pirate Adventure.  Argh Matey!! Bring your scallywags to help you navigate for booty! Challenge your team members to find their way to 23 game stations hidden throughout the maze. You'll need sharp skills in order to navigate the ominous walls of corn - learn, compete, discover and explore. Join the Quest!

Check out our web page to learn more about the hours and days we're open. We will also be hosting groups such as corporate outings, scouts, church groups, schools and fund raisers. Book your group today by calling 207-998-3592 to speak with Sage.
'We're all ears!'

Yours truly,
                                  Kathie and Peter Bolduc

Quick Tips for Improving Gas Mileage

Transportation accounts for 66% of U.S. oil use - mainly in the form of gasoline. Here are some ways to improve gas mileage as reported by the US Department of Energy

Don't idle. The best way to warm the car is to drive it.

Sudden or aggressive driving wastes gas. Cutting your speed or rapid acceleration on the highway alone can lower your gas mileage by 33%.

Use overdrive to reduce your car's engine speed. This saves gas and reduces wear.

Lighten your load. Clean extra weight by removing all unnecessary items from you car. In addition, reduce drag by removing roof racks when not in use.

Regular maintenance will surely help:
  • Use the right grade motor oil recommended by the car's manufacture to lower gasoline mileage by 1% to 2%.
  • Keep tires properly inflated and aligned to improve gasoline mileage by 3.3%.
  • Replace clogged air filters to improve gas mileage by as much as 10%.

Sometimes you can end up with an extra lobster or two. Here's a recipe for using the left overs for a whole new taste sensation.

1 lb. lobster meat, cut in chunks
1/2 lb. cooked shrimp
1 c. chopped celery
1 sm. chopped onion
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. Tabasco sauce
1 c. mayonnaise

Mix all together and put in casserole.

TOPPING:
1/2 c. melted butter
16 crushed saltines

Topping: Mix together; put on top of casserole. Sprinkle a little paprika on top. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. Serve with baked potato and green vegetable.

Click here for the online version of the recipe.

Note of interest - Maine Soft Shell Lobsters are only availabe  while they are mirgarting during the months of July, August & September. Soft shell lobsters have a little less meat compared to the hard shell but some say that the extra sweetness is worth it. Find out for yourself!
