Greetings!
Spring has brought an abundance of new life to the farm. The mama
cows and pigs have been busy as we've made room for 38 piglets and 26 calves. We
have been plowing & tilling in preparation for planting balsam seedlings for
Christmas tress and 9 acres for our fall corn maze. Our two green houses are
brimming with vegetable seedlings. Though the fiddleheads have past, in the
coming months we should be loaded with native fruits & vegetables, starting
with strawberries later this month.
Down time is precious so if you're planning a big gathering let
us help you do your shopping. We'd be happy to pull your order for you and have
it ready when you arrive, especially if you're ordering lobsters and clams.
Thanks to all those who shared your comments from last month's
informal survey. We're always happy to hear feedback and look forward to future
suggestions and comments.
Yours
truly,
Kathie and Peter Bolduc

Living Green Tips

Unwanted Visitors
Here are
some earth friendly suggestions for dealing with pesky backyard mosquitoes. The
first line of defense against mosquitoes is to make your backyard less inviting.
Since they love standing water it would be beneficial to remove yard items that
collect water and change the water twice a week in birdbaths and wading
pools. Another way to create a less hospitable environment is with plants that
repel mosquitoes. There is quite a bit written about the qualities of marigolds
and catnip for this purpose.
Marigolds
Planting marigolds around your deck or patio works as a natural bug
repellent because the flowers give off a fragrance bugs and flying insects do
not like. You have to
use the giant old fashioned marigolds, as the newer varieties have no odor. They
are easy to grow from seed and should be planted in abundance in and around the
area you want to keep mosquito free.
Catnip
One of the
most powerful mosquito repellant plants is ordinary catnip. Recent studies have
shown that it is ten times more effective than DEET at repelling mosquitoes. To
use as a repellent, release the aroma by simply crushing a few leaves and rub
on your skin and clothing to enhance the effect. It is easy to grow from seed,
and quickly re-seeds. It's true that catnip can have an intoxicating effect on
cats. You might need to protect your plants with fencing or plan to grow it in
hanging baskets.
In addition to garden plants, here a few "green" bug repellant recipes to
try:
Avon
Skin-So-Soft®
Mix 2 cups
water, 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup "Avon's Skin-So-Soft®" and 1 tablespoon of
eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle; shake and let the contents settle; then mist
yourself. This formula was developed and
is recommended by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and is pet safe. Campers often report that the very best
mosquito repellent is Avon Skin-So-Soft® bath oil mixed half and half with
rubbing alcohol. Click here to find an Avon
representative http://shop.avon.com/shop/find_a_rep.asp?
Garlic Spray Mix one part garlic juice with 5 parts water
in a small spray bottle. Shake well before using. Spray lightly on exposed body
parts for an effective repellent lasting up to 5 - 6 hours. Strips of cotton
cloth can also be dipped in this mixture and hung in areas, such as patios, as
a localized deterrent. (Garlic juice can be found in grocery stores in the
spice aisle or you can purchase it on line - http://www.garlicvalleyfarms.com/product1.html.)
For Your
Yard
Mix 1 cup
lemon scented ammonia and 1 cup lemon scented dish soap
Pour into a 20 gallon hose-end sprayer and fill the balance of the container
with water. Spray the area 3 times a week in the early morning or late in the
evening. (You'll attract less attention from the mosquitoes if you wear light
colored clothing as they are attracted to dark colors.)

RECIPE of the MONTH
Southwestern Roasted Corn Salad
This is a nice alternative to traditional corn on the cob.
INGREDIENTS
8 ears fresh corn in husks 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 green bell pepper, diced 1 red onion, chopped 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/2 cup olive oil 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 3 limes, juiced 1 teaspoon white sugar salt and pepper to taste 1 tablespoon hot sauce
DIRECTIONS
1. Place the corn in a large pot with
enough water to cover, and soak at least 15 minutes.
2. Preheat grill for high heat. Remove
silks from corn, but leave the husks.
3. Place corn on the preheated grill.
Cook, turning occasionally, 20 minutes, or until tender. Remove from heat, cool
slightly, and discard husks.
4. Cut the corn kernels from the cob,
and place in a medium bowl. Mix in the red bell pepper, green bell pepper, and
red onion.
5. In a blender or food processor, mix
the cilantro, olive oil, garlic, lime juice, sugar, salt, pepper, and hot
sauce. Blend until smooth, and stir into the corn salad.
