 Valentine's Day
 is
in two weeks!
We have a selection of candy and fine wines to share with your special sweetheart.

(Just in case you need some inspiration, here
is a site for free poems!)

Greetings!

Though winter may seem like a long season, it actually has the fewest days. It won't be long before we can spend more time outdoors. May the rest of your winter be enjoyable.

Yours truly,

February                                         Maple Bottles

Spring is only 49 days away.
The animals on the farm appreciate that the days are getting longer and warmer as they lounge around and soak up the sun.

Our Celebration of spring has
also begun as we work daily in the sugar bush. As of today we have done a majority of the repairs and will begin the tapping process shortly. When this is complete we'll wait for Mother Nature to smile on us with her warm days and cool nights. It won't be long before the maple sap has been collected and our pure maple syrup is being bottled for your breakfast table.

Invitation
If you would like to experience sugar making call us at our farm market, leave your name and number and we'll let you know when the sap is running and you can join us.

Reminder
Don't forget to get your wood orders in early. On average you can save $50.00 per cord by ordering green wood early, compared to waiting until fall and buying seasoned wood.
Wood will season in your yard just as easily as ours, so take advantage of the savings.

Until we meet again, may the sun shine upon you and the wind be at your back.

Peter

Improve Your Indoor Air Quality with Plants

Spider Plant

In the late 1980s, a study by NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) resulted in excellent news for homeowners and office workers everywhere. The study concluded that common houseplants such as bamboo palms and spider plants not only make indoor spaces more attractive, they also help to purify the air!

After conducting the study, NASA and ALCA came up with a list of the most effective plants for treating indoor air pollution.

1. Heartleaf philodendron                     8. Weeping Fig
2. Elephant ear philodendron                9. Golden pothos
3. Cornstalk dracaena                        10. 'Mauna Loa', peace lily
4. English ivy                                     11. Philodendron selloum
5. Spider plant                                   12. Chinese evergreen
6. Janet Craig dracaena                      13. Bamboo or reed palm
7. Warneck dracaena                          14. Snake plant
                                                         15. Red-edged dracaena

I spoke to Mike Blais at Blais Florist in Lewiston, ME. He shared that the plants identified in the study are easy to care for and are economical to purchase. For more information you can contact their greenhouse manager, Crystal Ward, at 800-783-8568.

For an average home of under 2,000 square feet, the study recommends using at least fifteen samples of a good variety of these common houseplants to help improve air quality. They also recommend that the plants be grown in six inch containers or larger.

The Versatile Hamburger

It's always burger season.Whether you pan fry,
broil or grill, burgers are easy and satisfying.
Here are some tips for toppings to add a little zing
to this American
favorite.

Aloha Burger - slices of bacon and a ring of pineapple.

French Burger - warm Brie cheese placed over slices of granny smith apples.

Olive Burger - create a spread by mixing chopped green & black olives with cream cheese.

Mexican Burger - top with shredded lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and avocado.

High Society Burger - dress your burger with sour cream, caramelized onions & Swiss cheese.

Doc's Favorite Burger - peanut butter & bacon.

On The Ranch - barbeque sauce and diced onions.

Saucy Burger - smoother your burger with mushrooms sautéed in Worcestershire sauce.

Having a gathering? Assemble a hamburger topping station and let guests create their own hamburger masterpiece. FYI - you can cook your burgers frozen. Just allow extra cooking time.
