Obama Provides New Federal Funding for Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs
On December 16, 2009, President Obama signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act for FY 2010, which included the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill.
Under this bill, Congress provided a total of $110 million for a new Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative, which includes $100 million for competitive grants to a range of public and private entities for evidence-based programs that reduce teen pregnancy. All programs must be medically accurate and age appropriate. The $100 million is divided into two separate pots: (1) $75 million to replicate programs that have been rigorously evaluated and have the strongest evidence of success and (2) $25 million for innovative strategies and programs that may not yet have a strong evaluation. The initiative also includes $10 million for technical assistance, training, evaluation, outreach and additional program support to assist the newly-established Office of Adolescent Health in effectively running the program. In addition, Congress provided $4.5 million for program evaluation.
For more information on the new federal funding please visit the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy's website.
To learn how this may affect your organization directly, please plan to participate in the SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy's conference call, Understanding the Federal Budget on January 20, 2010. The first in a three part series, this one hour conference call will outline the dedicated funding stream in the new 2010 Federal budget for research proven, comprehensive teen pregnancy prevention programs. This is an exciting time in our field and a fiscal opportunity you need to know about! For more information or to register please visit our website. |

The Buzz: "The Pregnancy Pact" Sidney Bloom, an online-magazine journalist, returns to her hometown to investigate the sudden spike in teenage pregnancies at her old high school. Almost immediately, she comes up against Lorraine Dougan (Nancy Travis), the head of the local conservative values group and mother of Sara, a newly pregnant 15-year-old. Meanwhile, the school nurse tries to convince the school to provide contraception to students to address the pregnancy epidemic but is met with great opposition from the school and community. As the number of pregnant girls climbs to 18, a media firestorm erupts when Time magazine reports that the rise in the number of pregnancies at the school is the result of a "pregnancy pact." As the mystery unfolds about whether or not "the pact" is real, Sidney soon realizes that all of the attention is disguising the much larger issues that are at the core of the story.
Tune into Lifetime on Saturday, January 23 at 9 pm et/pt to view the premiere of "The Pregnancy Pact." |
Check Out Our Latest Blog: But What Can I Do?
I work with a group of 5th grade girls at my church. We meet every Wednesday evening for group time with all of our first through sixth graders where we sing, dance, and have a great time before heading out to our individual small groups by grades. My group is probably fairly typical of any smattering of 5th grade girls in the nation - boisterous and energetic, from various socioeconomic situations; some with both biological parents still together, but many are part of a blended or single-parent family. Some of the girls love Taylor Swift and Hannah Montana and aren't altogether sure what they think about boys. Some love sports or school or baking Christmas cookies with mom and still carry a stuffed animal with them everywhere they go. Some are aspiring fashionistas with highlighted ponytails while others wear the same hand-me-down hooded sweatshirt or ripped jeans week after week. Click here to read more |

Young, Uninsured, and Seeking Change: Health Coverage of Young Adults and Their Views on Health Reform--Findings from the Commonwealth Fund Survey of Young Adults, 2009
Young adults are one of the largest uninsured segments of the population. This analysis of new survey data from The Commonwealth Fund finds almost half are without insurance at some time during the year. As they hit milestones like high school or college graduation, they face loss of coverage as they are dropped from parents' plans or public insurance programs. In the current economic climate, young adults are less likely to find jobs, and when they do, are frequently offered positions that come without benefits. Provisions in the health reform bills could help young adults by expanding Medicaid eligibility, creating a health insurance exchange with premium subsidies, and requiring insurers and employers to allow young adults to remain on parents' plans up to age 26 or 27. These provisions could help young adults obtain and keep affordable, comprehensive coverage through transitions from school to work and from job to job.
Recession Puts Strain on Family Planning Centers According to Guttmacher Study
A new survey by the Guttmacher Institute, A Real-Time Look at the Impact of the Recession on Publicly Funded Family Planning Centers, reports that publicly funded family planning providers are struggling to meet a growing need for subsidized contraceptive care. This demand, according to the survey, is being driven by more women wanting to postpone childbearing during tough economic times. This surge is straining already-limited resources, and is exacerbated by rising unemployment that has resulted in more women losing employer-based insurance coverage.

Youth Service Projects Supported in the U.S. and Canada Pay It Forward Foundation Mini-Grant Program
The Pay It Forward Foundation was established to inspire students to realize that they can change the world, and to provide them with opportunities to do so. Pay It Forward Mini-Grants are designed to fund one-time service-oriented projects that are identified by youth as activities they would like to perform to benefit their school, neighborhood, or greater community, and that include learning goals for the youth participants. Projects must contain a "pay it forward" focus - that is, they must be based on the concept of one person doing a favor for others, who in turn do favors for others, with the results growing exponentially. Schools, churches, and community youth groups (with an adult sponsor) in the U.S. and Canada may apply for funding. The application deadlines are September 15 and February 15 of each year; however, requests may be submitted at any time. Visit the Foundation's website to download the Mini-Grant guidelines.
The Junior League of Florence, Inc.
Applications for Community Assistance grants up to $2,000 in value are now being accepted by the Junior League of Florence, Inc. All funds should be used for activities in the Pee Dee Region. The application deadline is February 15, 2010. For more information on how to apply click here. |
