Welcome from Marjorie
Dear ,
The First Time You Forget To Thank Someone May Be the Last Time You See Her (Or Him)
This issue of eNews, and the AMSOV Newsletter available on our website include ideas from our various member orchestras about how they acknowledge and honor their volunteers. You are sure to find at least a couple of new ideas in the newsletter that you can use to the advantage of your own volunteer group.
Conference Chair Helen Shaffer shares some of the delights awaiting you at our spring 2011 conference in Houston.
Immediate Past President Heather Moore invites you to consider becoming a member of our AMSOV Board. We also include our congratulations to Heather upon her assuming the presidency of the League of American Orchestras Volunteer Council.
Enjoy meeting two of our dedicated Board members, Linda Tojek and Ann Philbin. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to contact Heather about joining the 2011-2013 AMSOV Board.
In these challenging times, the service of volunteers is more crucial than ever to ensure the continued viability and strength of our orchestras. Therefore please allow me to express my very great appreciation to you for your dedication to your own orchestra and to the classical orchestra world as a whole. Wishing you on-going success in 2010, Marjorie Saulson, AMSOV President |

AMSOV Member Volunteer Recognition Recognizing and honoring volunteers for their commitment can be done in many ways. The Summer Newsletter which is printed and mailed to AMSOV members, highlights recognition programs reported from seventeen volunteer organizations. Following are a few to tantalize you and encourage you to read the printed newsletter when it arrives in August. You can also download a copy from www.amsov.org
Boston Symphony Association of Volunteers
Boston Symphony Hall | The Boston Symphony Association of Volunteers (BSAV) is featured in the Summer newsletter for its comprehensive volunteer recognition program. Individuals are recognized for volunteering in the true spirit of service, not for what they get out of the opportunity. This philosophy includes many admirable characteristics, such as being dependable, adaptable, aggressive in reaching out for new talent, open to advice from others, and able to delegate.
In addition to the qualities outlined above, the BSAV Board of Directors honors a volunteer who displayed a breadth of service, such as volunteering for multiple projects and events over a number of years. The recipient receives an award plaque and their name is displayed in the Volunteer office. For additional information, contact Ann Philbin, volunteer for the Boston Symphony and AMSOV membership chair.
CSO President Troy Devey and Volunteers | Cincinnati Symphony Association hosted a volunteer appreciation luncheon May 12, attended by over 100 volunteers and CSO staff members. CSO President Trey Devey thanked everyone for their incredible service to the Orchestra. Volunteers received a pack of Music Hall note cards that had been specially printed for the occasion.
LA Phil Bassist Dennis Trembly |
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliates produce Spring Celebration at the end of the concert season. It is an annual business meeting celebrating accomplishments, presenting year-end financial gifts to the LA Phil and lunching with orchestra members who had donated their time and talent throughout the year by performing at the 16 committees' neighborhood musicales. This year, Spring Celebration included the conclusion of a year-long membership drive and celebration of a net increase of 72 members, with the winning Committee of Professional Women winning free Hollywood Bowl tickets for its entire membership plus the use of The Volunteer Cottage for a pre-concert picnic supper. Other ways the Affiliates reward their members include presenting vouchers for two free tickets to a summer Hollywood Bowl classical concert for every four hours of volunteer work at the Symphonies for Schools program where 13,000 children from grades 3 through 12 experience a concert in Walt Disney Concert Hall the last week in February. Volunteer to help at the pre-concert activities for children attending the Toyota Symphonies for Youth concerts on Saturday mornings results in a ticket to the concert. For committees reaching their financial goal for the Philharmonic Friends Campaign, a case of wine is presented to the committee at victory brunch. Those Affiliates who contribute to the Affiliates Endowment Fund for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association are invited to an exclusive rehearsal of the orchestra with an opportunity to meet the visiting conductor. It all adds up to a dynamic organization of volunteers.
Lois King Volunteer of the Year | The Oregon Symphony recognizes the five Chapter Presidents with certificates of appreciation at its May meeting. In addition, four outstanding volunteers, Donna Larson, Paula Johannsen, Allison Howard, and Dan Rasay, were recognized with certificates of appreciation. Lois King was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for 2010 and received a trophy. |
