Israeli Social Enterprise Taskforce
As a result of today's economic realities, the gap between traditional nonprofit organizations and traditional for-profit businesses has been slowly filled by a range of hybrid ventures, including social enterprises - social mission driven businesses whose revenues are channeled back into the business to achieve their social purpose. The social enterprise concept is finally gaining acceptance in Israel, although we are still significantly lagging behind the United States and England. As of yet there are insufficient frameworks and policies in Israel to support and encourage such ventures.
Against this changing world and new economic backdrop and understanding the importance of social enterprises in Israel as a way to achieve sustained impact and ensure the longevity of third sector organizations, IVN, together with Bogot & Keidar Advocates initiated a Social Enterprise Taskforce. The taskforce, which met for the first time in June, is a tri-sectorial forum comprised of social investors, social enterprise entrepreneurs, experts in the field of social enterprise, academia and thought leaders, and helping to create a platform that encourages social enterprise whether through regulatory changes, new financial tools, effecting public opinion, etc.
This new supportive platform will help generate an environment within which the hybrids will be able to effect change quickly and sustain themselves and grow.
On Aug. 10, 2011 Prime Minister Netanyahu appointed the Tachtenberg Committee. The committee is charged with the task of defining steps towards the alleviation of the economic burden on Israeli society. As a consequence the committee has issued a request for position papers addressing this matter.
In Mid-August the Taskforce submitted a position paper entitled Social Business as a tool to close social gaps and create social justice"
