Social Impact

IVN Round Table 2011

Date:  June 2011

The gap between traditional nonprofit organizations to traditional for-profits businesses has been slowly filled by a range of hybrid ventures. These hybrids include (i) nonprofit organizations with income generating activities and (ii) social businesses - social mission driven businesses whose revenues are channeled back into the business to achieve their social purpose. These hybrid ventures do not clearly fit within the three traditional sectors (government, business or non-profit), yet they are gaining in prominence, raising a series of questions for entrepreneurs and policymakers that we would like to address in IVN's 2011 round table:

To what extent can we look to market forces and entrepreneurship to help resolve social problems and achieve public goals? Are achieving social objectives a realistic goal in light of the commitment of for-profit business? What role does and should the government play in encouraging or enabling social entrepreneurs in this emerging sector to achieve important policy goals?

IVN's Newest Social Ventures

IVN's Social Venture Program is the next generation of our highly successful Social Entrepreneur Fellowship Program and Economic Reconstruction Program (IERI). The Social Venture Program, launched in July 2010, supports and incubates social ventures dedicated to developing and implementing innovative and systemic solutions to social problems and challenges through mentoring, capacity building and financial support.

In Spring 2010 IVN selected three new promising ventures and, as a result of our Fall 2010 Call for Candidates, we recently selected three more, with whom we intend on generating substantial social impact. Our new ventures were selected from the close to 70 candidates who submitted applications to the program.
