Greetings!
This is my last introduction for the SCOPE E-Update. I have written four different first sentences and none of them feel quite right so let me just tell you about what's going through my head:
- This transition away from SCOPE is positive for SCOPE and for me and amicable for everyone
- SCOPE is recalibrating and exploring how to renew its work
- I am looking back on a pretty good ride
- I am looking forward to a pretty good ride
Questions are comfortable for me so I will indulge myself.
How does a community get better? Or as my friend, Fredd Atkins says, "better and better?"
Who needs to be engaged for lasting change to occur?
Where does change start? How does it scale? Out or in? Both?
What role does money play? Power? Privilege?
What do we know about ourselves that can contribute to change?
These are questions that are fundamental to the work of anyone interested in community. This includes funders, government, nonprofits and it also includes people who live and work and come together here.
Now, as I sign off from this space, I want to be clear about my strong belief that the good work and positive changes that I have been witness to have happened because of you and others who figure out how to get past self-interest. Those of you who have stepped out of your comfort zone and opened yourself to perspectives that are not comfortable, congratulations, that is what makes a difference.
For a decade I woke up every morning convinced that I was a small part of a noble effort to change the world. That's a privilege that I expect to continue.

Data Byte - Insights from Dead Ushahidi: What Makes a Thriving Crowd-Sourced Platform? |
Here in Sarasota County, we love the idea of crowd-sourcing. Implementing the latest technology to provide a platform for community members to provide their input and wisdom is a great way to share that wisdom with a greater audience. One such crowd-sourced platform that the Community Data Collaborative has been working on is the "Life is Good in Sarasota County" community video campaign. Life is Good in Sarasota County is all about discovering the qualities of life that matter to Sarasota County residents....Read more on the SCOPE blog.
