Greetings! |
Ideas Are Easy
From where I sit, this community has shifted its thinking about who we are and what that means, and it has happened quickly. The obvious example of that relates to our demographic as the oldest large county in the nation. When the community started this discussion it was not received well by many. Since that beginning there has been a shift to thinking about the advantages that we may have in leadership and innovation related to a global issue.
It was a tough road with many naysayers. "Who cares?" "Can't be done."
Now, the Institute for the Ages is soon to announce a CEO after a national search. The CEO of RTI International is commited to joining the national board. The Institute is already launched with research underway and business under development.
The idea was the easy part. The perseverance is what separated the Institute from just some idea that is not implemented. Hundreds of people and many institutions hung in there.
I am writing this note to say that the next big idea is likely to take the same course - big idea, slow acceptance. But BIG ideas also have potential for BIG rewards. The community has already proven itself capable of shifting thinking, resources and making big ideas happen.
What's next?

This is exactly what the Community Data Collaborative of Sarasota County is all about, so we are well poised as a community to compete in this national challenge! Data Byte: Growing Number of People Who Identify
as Latino/Hispanic Growing Number of People Who Identify As Latino/Hispanic in SaCo | As a relatively new resident in Sarasota County, and of a North Sarasota neighborhood in particular, I've noticed that I have several Spanish speaking neighbors. I like that, since I speak Spanish too. As I've heard more Spanish when I'm out and about, I've been thinking about the "Six Disruptive Demographics Trends" report issued last year. One of trends that particularly stood out to me in that report was the so-called "Browning of America." I wondered- has Sarasota County also experienced the trend of an increasing number of residents who identify as Latino/Hispanic? Read more in our blog. |
