SCOPE
Our community focused on our future

Greetings!
The room was full with people from south and north and even outside Sarasota County.  The ages spanned five generations, maybe more.  The diversity of politics, income, ethnicity and perspectives was unusually rich.  What brought people to this event, the 10th anniversary of SCOPE and the award of the 2011 Boundary Crosser (the community building equivalent to the Nobel Prize for peace)?  I suspect at least two things.  Surely, one of those is a stellar award recipient in Diane McFarlin.  Diane is a national and local exemplar of engaging across boundaries and she has quite a following of friends and colleagues.  The other attraction is the elegant but audacious idea that connected people can transform Sarasota County.  Maybe the appeal of this idea is that in one's heart is the knowledge that it is ONLY such connected and inspired people that have any chance of generating big changes.
It is no accident that these two things are linked - in fact they are more than that.  Those who intentionally cross boundaries do so because they know that any other approach is isolating and temporary.  Change that results in long-term well-being, whether within a neighborhood or the nation, is fed by this reality.

For those who were there, take a look at the pictures.  For those who were not, please find your friends and ask them about it.

office workerWho wants to help with the Institute for the Ages data development?  With the 2010 Census and many other resources at our fingertips, we can start to generate valuable syntheses about our community and the state.  The Sanford Center for Aging does some of this with its Elders Count newsletter.  Take a look here to see what they've done.  If this appeals to you, let's talk.  Email Tim Dutton at tdutton@scopexcel.org.

As you know, SCOPE is a community engagement organization.  There are national foundations and state and federal initiatives that may find what is going on here worth their attention.  Who wants to become the resident expert at scanning the web and learning more about the opportunities for partnering with organizations/funders outside our county?  Contact Tim Dutton at tdutton@scopexcel.org

Household Cenus Couple Image

The NY Times has put together an analysis of the 2010 census data using the Social Explorer web application to show what households in America are looking like nowadays. Sarasota has the claim to fame as the oldest large county in the nation; so what do you think households with older adults in our community look like? And how many households in our community resemble your own? Check out our Blog to explore more!
