FILM: Genderf*kation: A Gender Emancipation

(social support/information)

Saturday, April 28, 2012
7:30 - 9:30pm

April's meeting will screen the film Genderf*kation: A Gender Emancipation.  We are proud to be bringing the film to Milwaukee for the first time.  Please spread the word and join us for this new opportunity to see a thought-provoking, engaging film.

Genderf*kation: A Gender Emancipation is the story of six individuals and their journey & triumphs through the social, religious and political landscapes of a society that struggles to understand or allow for gender variations. This documentary includes provocative interviews with professionals and outreach members who are active in this community to help shed light on a very controversial matter. This film breaks through the gender stereotypes and historical gender ideologies to liberate our bodies, minds and spirits from our own social Gender Dysphoria. Although it is based in Minnesota, the subject matter has no borders. The subject of gender is a taboo topic in many societies, yet fundamental to every aspect of all of our lives. Forget everything you think you know about gender and experience a GENDERF*KATION!

UWM Women's Studies Program Feminist Lecture Series Presents Susan Stryker, Ph.D. - Cross-Dressing for Empire: Transgender Performance at San Francisco's Bohemian Club, 1870s-1920s.  Susan Stryker is Associate Professor in Gender and Women's Studies and Director of the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona. She has served as executive director of the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco for many years and also co-directed the Award-winning documentary film "Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria." Professor Stryker is co-editor of The Transgender Studies Reader. Her current projects include a feature-length film about 1950s transsexual celebrity Christine Jorgensen and research into 19th-century cross-dressing theatricals at San Francisco's elite Bohemian Club. Meeting Follow-ups

Were you at FORGE's February screening of "How Do I Look?" or March's meeting on What Is Community?  Maybe you weren't able to attend either, but would like a glimpse of what happened?

Check out these two meeting follow-ups to see a list of trans-themed films and a "glossary" of where trans-folks and SOFFAs in Milwaukee congregate and connect.

1. Trans-themed films

On February 25, 2012, FORGE screened "How Do I Look?" as part of Black History Month.  Many people were interested in learning more about other trans-themed films.  Here is a brief list.  Some are available through Amazon.com or Netflix.com, while others may be more difficult to find.

2. Map of the Milwaukee (+) Trans Community: A Glossary

Click to find the map we collectively drew at the March 2012 meeting, and an accompanying "glossary" of organizations, businesses, and other trans resources that were part of that brainstorm.

Being transgender in America

Did you miss seeing Kate Bornstein (author and performance artist), Mara Keisling (executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality), and Mel Wymore (a Democratic candidate for the New York City Council) as they discuss gender identity and discrimination against trans people on MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry's show?  Watch this segment at

EEOC Ruling helps protect trans people

On April 20, 2012, an opinion issued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) declared that an employer cannot discriminate against an employee or applicant on the basis of the person's gender identity.  Doing so, is violating the prohibition on sex discrimination contained in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.    Learn more...

Beyond the binary in academic research, forms, and life

FORGE has had the pleasure of working with the Iowa City trans community and sexual assault providers this past year.  This article from The University of Iowa's IowaNow highlights one of Iowa City's trans community leaders who discusses the pervasiveness of binary frameworks in academics and beyond.  Learn more...

Webinars for Providers on Transgender Sexual Assault

In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, FORGE welcomes providers to attend two webinars on transgender victims of sexual assault. Both webinars are geared towards victim service providers, but all people who serve transgender, gender non-conforming and SOFFAs (Significant Others, Friends, Family and Allies) survivors are welcome to attend.

Both webinars will be hosted by FORGE staff Loree Cook-Daniels (Policy and Program Director) and Michael Munson (Executive Director).

[Note: Both webinars have had extremely high registration.  Unfortunately, we had to stop accepting registrations for Trans 101.  However, we will be offering an additional webinar to allow everyone who wishes to participate the opportunity.  We will also be moving to a new webinar platform for the April 30th webinar, which will allow for a greater number of participants.]

This project was produced by FORGE under 2009-SZ-B9-K003, awarded by the Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice.
