WORKING WHILE TRANS!!

February 26, 2011
7:30 - 9:00pm

@ Milwaukee LGBT Community Center

The National Center on Transgender Equality (NCTE) in conjunction with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), just release "Injustice at every turn: A report of the national transgender discrimination survey."  In this detailed and compelling report, they cover employment discrimination, as well as many other forms of discrimination transgender individuals and loved ones experience.  At February's meeting, we will use the survey results as a jumping off point to compare national statistics with our local reality.   Ample time will be available for discussion of issues such as on-the-job harassment, loss of chosen career, under-employment, non-consensual outing, forced bathroom choice, the role of transition (helping or hindering in maintaining or pursuing jobs), resilience, and strategies for success.  FORGE staff will also reveal a new opportunity for transgender people and loved ones seeking employment in Wisconsin.

Trans discrimination survey results released

The 3-years-in-the-making, much-anticipated survey of transgender people's experiences with discrimination and abuse has been released!  The National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Lesbian and Gay Task Force today issued its 200+ page, "Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey."  It's available for download at http://endtransdiscrimination.org/PDFs/NTDS_Report.pdf.

Transgender surgery is now deductible!

Although surgery is certainly not the goal for many trans people (or may not be a choice that is affordable), having the ability to claim trans-related surgery as a medical deduction on taxes is both validating of transgender peoples' lives/realities AND helps defray the usually-out-of-pocket costs of surgery.  Read more, from Joanne Herman's Huffington Post article at:

NCTE Lobby Days

"Each year, transgender people, our families, friends and allies join us in Washington, DC, as we go to our members of Congress to share vital information with them about transgender people and our families. We will also have great opportunities to talk with policy makers in the Administration whose work directly impacts our lives. Please join us as we make strides to bring transgender equality to our nation's capital.

Make your plans now to join us on March 13-15, 2011 for an exciting conference and the opportunity to educate your member of Congress about vital issues for transgender people. Our goal is to make this our largest and most diverse Lobby Day to date. Will you help us?"
