transparent: a film by Jules Rosskam

December 4, 2010
6:00pm
@ Milwaukee LGBT Community Center

Pink or blue. Male or Female. Mommy or Daddy. Categories that we all take for granted are broken apart in transparent, a documentary about 19 female-to-male transsexuals living in the United States who have given birth and, in all but a few stories, gone on to raise their biological children.

transparent focuses on its subjects' lives as parents, revealing the diverse ways in which each person reconciles giving birth and being a biological mother with his masculine identity. Traditional views of gender are further re-examined through the variety of genders the children use to conceive of their parents. The first-person stories in transparent explain how changing genders is dealt with and impacts the relationships, if at all, within these families.

The subjects resonate powerfully as typical parents and as human beings dealing with issues like single parenthood, teen pregnancy and their children's emotional and physical development. Through these extraordinary men, the film challenges the ways that people relate to one another, particularly within our immediate families, based on gender.

[note: the screening of transparent takes place of the usually scheduled open rap discussion portion of the social support meeting.]

Transgender travelers and new TSA policies

The National Center for Transgender Equality released a concise, resource-packed guide for travelers who may need to head through new airport security measures (pat downs and full body scanners).

They also updated their "Whole Body Imaging FAQ" which shares many details about the new imaging technology used at an increasing number of airports across the country.

Community Cares - follow up

The acute efforts following Chanel Larkin's murder created a "safety net" for many people who needed an outlet for their grief, a place to take action, and an opportunity for connection to a community of like-minded individuals.  Although Larkin's accused (and confessed) murderer has not been sentenced (scheduled for December 20, 2010), the need for ongoing Community Cares events has shifted from organized community engagement to personal action to create community.

At the November 7, 2010 Community Cares meeting, attendees decided that the best way to create community (now), to bridge the gaps between the fragmented portions of our greater community and to reduce isolation was for each of us to reach out a hand to one another.  We agreed that we would each invite someone to attend events with us, offer rides to meetings, and adventure to new groups and meetings (ideally with a friend - old or new).

Here are a couple of concrete examples:

  • Invite someone wanted to attend a FORGE meeting (but may have been too nervous or lacked resources to get there).  Offer to pick them up. Show up on December 4th and sit together.
  • Call someone you know (or don't know) and ask them to join you at the Connexus holiday dinner on December 11 (see above).  If you are able, offer to pay their way.
  • Ask someone who is part of Las Chicas or SHEBA to tell you about their group, or about their life.
  • Ask someone you met at the last FORGE meeting (or GGG or Community Cares or SAGE or Lesbian Alliance or _____) to join you for the Admirals game on Friday, December 3 - stay and watch the Village People.  Everyone can enjoy positioning their bodies into the awkward (and fast) poses of YMCA!
  • Pick up the phone and call someone you haven't spoken with for a few months.
  • Send a postcard to an organization doing good work and encourage their leaders/staff to read it to their constituents.

Consider joining in this effort of reaching out to one another, offering friendship and compassion, expanding your world to include more people.
Is that legal follow

Thanks to Laura Sette! Those who attended November's support and information meeting learned a great deal about the name change process, and many other legal issues.  More information/resources will continue to be sent out over the next months.

"Changing your Name in Wisconsin (Milwaukee County)" was handed out at the meeting. This document was created by Jay Botsford (staff member of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center) and was intended for a youth audience.  Although some information is slightly dated (fees, for example), this is an excellent step by step resource for changing your name!

Transgender Day of Remembrance: Thank you.

FORGE deeply appreciates Rev. Wendy Woodruff and the wonderful hospitality and warmth of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Community Church who hosted the Day of Remembrance vigil and potluck.

Markie Wenzel read a piece of her writing, drafted after the death of Milwaukee's Chanel Larkin.  You can listen to it here:  http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=176866732325034&comments
