Our Founding Father was a Fag?: Lou Sullivan and the Forging of the FTM Community

A Presentation by Brice Smith

August 7, 2010 @ 7:30 - 9:00pm

at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center
315 W. Court Street, Milwaukee, WI

Milwaukee native Lou Sullivan (1951-1991) is one of the most important people in transgender history. He was a pioneering FTM activist who, because he was also gay, played an important role in changing the medical diagnosis and treatment of transsexualism, and in forging an FTM community for everyone of the transmasculine persuasion. Sullivan overcame many obstacles to realize his sense of self, and dedicated his life to assisting other FTMs in doing the same. When he died from AIDS complications in San Francisco, Sullivan was hailed as a hero around the world because he had enabled untold numbers of individuals to articulate their identities and find community with others who identified as FTMs. Join us in hearing the story of the remarkable Lou Sullivan and the early years of our community. Following the talk there will be a Q&A and discussion.

Brice D. Smith, whose dissertation is titled "'Yours in Liberation': Lou Sullivan and the Construction of FTM Identity," recently received his PhD in History at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is currently coordinating the Milwaukee Transgender Oral History Project, and constructing the Lou Sullivan Project website, which features Sullivan's journals.

Community Cares: Justice for Chanel Larkin

Sunday,  August 8, 2010 -- 2:00 - 4:00 pm

@ The Milwaukee LGBT Center
315 W. Court Street, Milwaukee, WI

There is a great deal of momentum within our community to work collectively and diligently towards justice for Chanel Larkin.

Join FORGE and other community members -- from multiple communities that combine to create one beautiful and rich larger community -- to discuss follow up actions from the last meeting, as well as to plan and organize for future events and actions.

This meeting is exceptionally timely, since the hearing date of Chanel's accused killer has been rescheduled to Monday, August 9, 2010.  Unfortunately, the date originally announced/scheduled for this motion hearing was postponed from last week.  It remains possible that Monday's hearing may be postponed again, as well.

We -- many of us -- have some creative ideas for next steps.  Please join us and add your voice to the chorus.

July meeting - apology!

As many of you know, the July meeting was canceled on short notice.  In addition to emails, we posted a sign on the door of the Community Center.  Unfortunately, the sign was removed and several attendees waited patiently outside the locked doors. Sorry!

FORGE apologizes for the inconvenience and late notice.

TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium

FORGE's michael munson will be presenting two workshops at the TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium in Columbus, Ohio over the weekend of August 13 - 15, 2010.  If you are attending the Symposium, please consider attending one of these two workshop, or dropping by FORGE's information table on Saturday, August 14, 2010.
Here is a bit more about each of the workshops:

Services Outside the Box: Helping Your Clients Navigate Sex-Segregated Services.

In an ideal world, every client would have access to ANY medical and mental health service they need.  Unfortunately, many services are sex-segregated, which provides additional barriers to clients (and providers).  This didactic and interactive workshop will examine how to creatively advocate for and with your clients around services such as sexual/domestic violence support groups and housing, OB/GYN/urology appointments, forms and policy management, referrals and networking. Providers will leave new solutions to old problems -- benefitting their clients and their field.
Friday, August 13, 2010 from 2:30 to 4:40pm

Soothing the soul through words, images, and experiential learning
This workshop is a dynamic, interactive, experiential, and reflective space that encourages and allows participants to transform feelings about personal or global loss, trauma or life-hardships into empowered hope.  Attendees - in a structured, safe, creative setting - will use writing, art, and movement exercises to address topics that impact us all. Participants will leave with a renewed sense of hope, community, and connection with themselves and with others. All materials provided, but feel free to bring your favorite healing journals and tools. No experience necessary.
Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 11:10am - 12:20pm

Loree Cook-Daniels will join munson at the information table on Saturday, as well as co-facilitate the Soothing the Soul workshop on Sunday morning.

We look forward to seeing some of you in Ohio.
