Touching Moments: Massage Techniques & More with Mark Robers

Sunday, November 7, 2009

7:30 - 9:00pm

We live in a touch-deprived, fast-paced world.  Many of us also carry so much shame or discomfort with our bodies that we shy away from any type of physical connection with others - even avoiding handshakes and hugs.

Mark Robers is a gifted massage therapist, body worker, and energy worker whose approach is insightful, integrated, and intuitive.  His eclectic style extends far beyond "just bodies" to tap into peoples' spirits, passions, fears, pain, and their ability to gain deeper understanding of themselves and learn to heal old wounds.

For over 20 years, Mark has had a vibrant bodywork practice, working with a wide range of clients - including a high volume of LGB and trans+/SOFFA individuals.

In this interactive evening, Mark will discuss some of the ways our culture discourages us all from being in our bodies and how we can become more aware of and in tuned with ourselves and our bodies.  He will teach a simple breathing technique, which can help calm and reduce stress - as well as encouraging greater self-awareness and release emotions.  To round out the evening, Mark will guide attendees through some gentle hands-on methods of connecting with others through massage.  These techniques can be used by anyone, with anyone - partners, friends, loved ones.

As with every FORGE event, participation is always voluntary.

[Attendees will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for a free, private bodywork session with Mark!]

Location:
Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, 315 W. Court Street, Milwaukee, WI

"Screaming Queens" and other transgender political issues
In honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance and Transgender Awareness Week, SAGE is partnering with FORGE to screen the much-acclaimed "Screaming Queens," a documentary about the transgender-led protest that came *before* Stonewall.  After the film, we'll talk about parallels and differences in lesbian/gay and trans organizing, both now and 30-40 years ago.  Come enhance your understanding of today's community by starting with a walk through our communal past!

Eli Clare: Living in Marked Bodies
White, disabled, and genderqueer, Eli Clare has a B.A. in Women's Studies, a M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and most importantly a penchant for rabble-rousing. Among other pursuits, he has walked across the United States for peace, coordinated a rape prevention program, and helped organize the first ever Queerness and Disability Conference. He has spoken all over the United States at conferences, community events, and colleges about disability, queer and trans identities, and social justice. Eli is the author of a book of essays Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness, and Liberation (South End Press, 1999) and a collection of poetry The Marrow's Telling: Words in Motion (Homofactus Press, 2007) and has been published in many periodicals and anthologies.

November 19: Thursday, 9:00pm
Eric Himan [performance, followed by meet & greet in the UWM LGBT Resource Center (Union WG-89)]
Eric Himan is so grassroots, his face is green. Though his music tells a different story. Without the help of record labels, booking agents, publicists, or management, Eric Himan is touring to more places, getting great press coverage, and still has time to run his record label, Thumbcrown Records. Magazines in the LGBT community took notice right away (The Advocate, OUT Magazine, Instinct) and newspapers (such as the Boston Herald, Pittsburgh-Post Gazette, and Phoenix New Times) interviewed him to find out what makes this work horse stay in the game despite obstacles such as major label artists, rooms that are booked by big agencies, and finding his audience. His music draws comparisons to male artists such as Maroon 5 and John Mayer but also female singer-songwriters, Ani DiFranco and Tracy Chapman.

The Adventures of Priscilla:  Queen of the Desert
"It's the Australian film that blitzed overseas box offices. It caused a near riot at the Cannes Film Festival. It won an Academy Award (Registeration Symbol). It's fun, daring, over-the-top and unforgettable. It's a road movie with attitude and the occasional frock." (IMDb)

This festive event encourages people to join together to celebrate Thanksgiving - or just to enjoy some great food, and even better company.  If you didn't attend the first 7 years', be prepared to see a wide range of the LGBT community at this event.  Every year, we see more and more wonderful diversity.

Join a welcoming community by coming to the Plymouth Church at 2717 East Hampshire, Milwaukee, WI 53202 on Saturday, November 28, 2009.
