Still Black: A Portrait of Black Transmen |
|
Sunday, October 18, 2009
$9/$7 admission
5:00pm
Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival
Still Black: A Portrait of Black Transmen (Kortney Ryan Ziegler, USA, video, 77min., 2008)
Community Co-Sponsors: Cream City Foundation, FORGE
Campus Partners: UWM Community Media Project , LGBT Resource Center
This insightful and thought-provoking documentary shares, with visual richness and an unfussy, upfront manner, the testimony of six African American transmen. The men (most from the Midwest)-among them a teacher, a lawyer, a poet, a preacher, a husband, a father-speak of transitioning, of passing, of family, of the relationship to MTFs and other transgender communities, of the intersecting concerns and issues around racial and transgender identity, of their own isolation and kinships. Kortney Ryan Ziegler's forthright documentary is something of an intervention, providing a needed platform for these otherwise unheard voices of people actively negotiating gender and race in their own pursuit and definition of identity.
Following the film, FORGE will host a discussion of the film in a nearby classroom.
Location: Union Theatre, located in the UWM Union. 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., 2nd floor, on the UWM campus.

Diagnosing Difference (Annalise Ophelian, USA, video, 60min., 2009) Community Co-Sponsor: FORGE Campus Partner: UWM LGBT Resource Center
How does it feel to have your gender identity included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders? The documentary Diagnosing Difference features interviews with thirteen transgender and genderqueer scholars, artists, and activists who explore the impact and implications of Gender Identity Disorder (GID) on their lives and communities. Using the diagnosis as a departure point, these diverse and articulate participants debunk myths and misconceptions about transgender identities, challenge stereotypical gender expectations, and offer insight into the terms and language used to describe transgender lives.
With
Kaden Later (Harriet Storm, USA, video, 9 min., 2009) A follow-up to Kaden, screened at last year's Festival, Kaden Later marries documentary with animation as it follows Kaden, a transman now in his early thirties, as he and his girlfriend Monika plan their wedding. Following the film, FORGE will host a discussion of the film in a nearby classroom.
Location: Union Theatre, located in the UWM Union. 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., 2nd floor, on the UWM campus.

| Touching Moments: Massage Techniques |
|
|
Saturday, November 7, 2009 7:30 - 9:00pm
We live in a touch-deprived, fast-paced world. Many of us also carry so much shame or discomfort with our bodies that we shy away from any type of physical connection with others - even avoiding handshakes and hugs.
In this interactive evening, we'll explore the power of breath and imagery, self-massage, and simple massage techniques that nearly anyone can use with anyone else - partners, friends, loved ones.
As with every FORGE event, participation is always voluntary.
Location: Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, 315 W. Court Street, Milwaukee, WI

Review of Therapist Panel . . |
|
|
Therapist Meet 'n' Greet. The add-on event of the Therapist Meet 'n' Greet was remarkably successful and informative. Participants and six panelists engaged in a great deal of sharing and networking. Thanks to our first Gearbits contributor dr for the following review.
________________________________________________________
FORGE Meet the Therapists Night [September 18, 2009] Guest contributor: dr A panel of 6 therapists from the region (Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago) introduced themselves and responded to a pre-arranged set of questions. After a break, there was Q & A (including anonymous questions from the audience of 31 transgender and questioning people, as well as SOFFAs. When the meeting was done, there was a lot of informal dialog and networking among everyone present. Another great idea from FORGE, Meet-the-Therapists night was truly a public service. I enjoyed listening to the panel and audience talk knowledgeably about transgender issues and other topics that too few of my friends and colleagues can handle. Although it's not quite the same as having been there, FORGE has prepared a listing of these and other local therapists that describes their experience and practice, along with contact information. [Ed. note: The updated FORGE therapist list can be found online at www.forge-forward.org/docs/therapists_2009.pdf] ... read more |

| What do the symbols mean?? |
|
|
Although everyone is welcome at any FORGE meeting, some meetings are designed with particular audiences in mind. These symbols indicate the focus of particular events and meetings.
Geared towards the entire transgender/gender non-conforming community and SOFFAs
Geared towards trans-masculine folks and SOFFAs
Reverse Inclusion: A trans+/SOFFA organization is hosting an event that welcomes the broader LGBTQIA (and straight) community. | |
