Do you provide services to LGBT people?  More than half of LGBT people are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or hate crimes, and ALL of us are affected by these crimes.  FORGE is sponsoring a full-day training on working with LGBT crime victims at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center (315 W. Court Street) on Saturday, August 22, and repeating it at the Milwaukee Center for Independence (2020 W. Wells Street) on Wednesday, August 26.  This highly interactive, fun, and innovative training will cover: best practices in policies and procedures related to LGBT "cultural competency," changing coworkers' and clients' anti-LGBT attitudes; identifying and lowering barriers to service for LGBT violence survivors; and improving the LGBT community's ability to recognize and deal with domestic  violence, sexual assault, and hate crimes.   Morning beverages, snacks, a boxed lunch, and a binder full of materials to take back to the office is included in the cost.  Suggested registration is $35.  Please pay what is best for you, between $25 and $55.

For further information, email michael munson tgwarrior@forge-forward.org or call 414-559-2123.  Pre-registration is required.

Kara Luening and FORGE have partnered to bring you a night of meditation on Monday, August 10, 2009.  Future meditation sessions are likely to follow!

Come to the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center on August 10, 2009 at 7:30pm for a simple, but powerful Taoist stillness practice.  This meditation is great for beginners in that it does not require the elimination of thought  - it only requires that one be able to focus on a certain point in the body.  It is also wonderful for the advanced practitioner in that it can provide a sacred moment of complete stillness that can lead one directly to the Tao itself.

Kara Luening, MSW, APSW, CST Candidate, is a psychotherapist and energy healer in private practice at Full Circle Counseling Solutions in Milwaukee, WI. Ms. Luening specializes in gender-related issues, psycho-spiritual awareness, and sacred sex therapy/education for individuals and couples of all diverse identities and lifestyles. She is a student with the Inner Focus Mystery School for Divine Mastery, and will have received her Master of Advanced Energy Healing Certification in the Spring of 2010.  Ms. Luening has a deep understanding about the body, mind, spirit & soul connection... and strives to help people uncover and embrace their true potential -- ultimately re-claiming their authentic self.

Guide for LGBT Victims of Crime

Wisconsin lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT) survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and hate crimes - and the professionals who serve them - have a useful new resource: FORGE has published, "Hope for Healing: A Guide for LGBT Victims of Crime."

The 97-page Guide, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime, profiles more than 50 Wisconsin victim service agencies, therapists, alternative healing practitioners, churches, and other organizations that provide services to victims of crime and welcome LGBT clients.  Each agency has its own page that describes services offered, hours, cost, geographic limitations, ages served, non-English languages spoken, and whether there is a limit on how long someone may access services.  Perhaps more important to LGBT crime victims, each agency is also clearly marked as to which gender(s) it serves, whether it offers non-gendered or "unisex" bathrooms, and how it rates on an LGBT "cultural competency" scale of 0 to 4.  The latter was determined by independent judges who looked at measures such as what proportion of the staff and volunteers have had LGBT cultural competency training and how often; whether the agency or professional's policies explicitly forbid discrimination and address how LGBT clients are to be served; whether and how the agency or professional publicly signals a welcome to LGBT clients; whether intake forms include options for describing same-sex partnerships and/or non-binary gender identity; what LGBT organizations the agency or professional partners with; and whether staff has been trained in how to handle anti-LGBT remarks made by other clientele.  Although these subjective judgments should not be relied upon to guarantee how a given agency will respond to an LGBT crime victim, they may help a crime victim decide where to start.  Perhaps more importantly, the cultural competency rating may encourage agencies and professionals to seek more training and/or assistance in making their services more LGBT-competent.

The Guide also contains more than a dozen short articles giving practical survival and healing advice to LGBT crime victims and the professionals who serve them.  The articles include:

  • Common reactions to crime
  • What now?  Making post-crime decisions
  • Self-advocacy: A to-do list for crime survivors
  • Supporting someone who has been victimized
  • Are you being abused?  (A discussion of domestic violence within LGBT relationships)
  • If it's not patriarchy, what is it?  (Description of major theories about why people abuse their intimate partners, beyond the commonly-discussed theory of patriarchal attitudes)
  • Safety planning
  • Dating again (Safe dating tips for those who have been victimized by a date or partner)
  • Finding and screening a therapist
  • Wisconsin crime victims' rights
  • Wisconsin crime victim compensation program

In addition, the Guide is sprinkled with facts about LGBT crime victims, inspiring quotes, and tips for survivors and their supporters.

The Guide is available free in two forms.  The web version will be regularly updated and can be downloaded at www.LGBTsurvivorsguide.org  A print version can be sent to anyone who sends a mailing address and request to tgwarrior@forge-forward.org or who requests by phone (414-559-2123).  Bulk orders can also be accommodated.

Rope Sex: Bondage For Lovemaking and More, with Lee Harrington

Rope bondage is a wonderful tool for spicing up your sex life- from binding legs open for access to the loins to turning a bed into somewhere a lover can't escape from, giving into their desires. We will learn how to make simple restraints for spread-eagle poses or binding lovers to chairs, as well as exploring ways to bind limb to limb, body to body, crotch ropes, and more. Let's explore and think creatively about techniques for adding bondage to your style of sensuality and sex. Bring at least one 25-30ft piece of rope, and a dildo if you have one, for hands-on play, though limited supplies will be available to borrow from the instructor. Pre-registration recommended.

LGBT Young Adults -- It Takes A Community...Can You Help?

Families and Individuals are needed to help LGBT young adults thrive!

Pathfinders, Inc, The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, Lad Lake, Inc,. and Children's Service Society of Wisconsin have joined forces to support young adults.

How can you help?  You would be paired with a young person who is living independently and help them with social, emotional and day-to-day living challenges -- enhancing their skills and encouraging their success.  The young person would also receive housing support and independent living support from a trained specialist.

Many of our young adults have no family to sustain and nurture them -  Can you help?
