I'm leaving on Thursday.
Say you'll come with me....

Sometimes I go about
            in pity for myself
And all the while
a great wind is bearing me across the sky.

                                                                                          - Ojibwa poem

Together,
    you and I,
will travel far and away up into the wilderness of the Inyo Mountains, west of Death Valley, and spend four days in preparation for a Vision Fast, five days alone on the sacred mountain with only sleeping bag, water and journal: no tent, no food, no friends - all in preparation to die. We know we have always held fast to our personal story like a drowning man at sea clings to a piece of floating  debris, and we've desperately defined ourselves by that soggy myth. Now it's time to let go - to die!

Because we are frightened of dying, we don't know how to live. We'll be hungry, and we'll dodge scorpions, rattlesnakes and lightening. Time moves slowly. We'll be hot, cold, lonely, but something in the warm winds will keep us safe, as we learn what it means to die psychologically every minute, to die to what we've cherished and to all we've been bitter about! We'll find a willingness to die every minute - to see the beauty of each day as if it's the first day of our lives, otherwise, we'll continue to live mechanically, and a mechanical mind can never know what love is or what freedom is!

I am leaving for the Inyos on Thursday. I'm taking you with me!
