HAVE YOU THOUGHT MUCH ABOUT YOUR BONES LATELY?

Most people spend much of their time worrying about their weight, deciding whether or not their muscles have enough tone in them and wondering if their abs are "ripped' enough . When was the last time you spent any time appreciating your bones? Bones are living tissue made up of calcium, phosphorous, water and other trace minerals. Bones are alive and can change shape based on the elements around them. (Notice how someone who frequently rides a horse will begin to develop "bowed" legs.) Bone is not just dependent on itself for health. Other glands, (like the thyroid gland), as well as various organs, help to ensure bone health. Bones are also dependent on the fascia sheath around them for optimal health. Bones do not operate independently in the body; bones rely on other aspects for their health. When one begins to examine overall bone health you might start by looking at many of the different relationships existing in the body that support the health of bones.

YOGA FOR HEALTHY BONES

Many people are at odds with how to best support their bone health. Quite a few have been misled by medical doctors who have strongly promoted the notion that the best way to ensure bone health is by strength training and high impact aerobic activity. While some people might have some small benefits, there are much better ways to promote bone health. The answer to this question lies in a consistent yoga practice. Yoga will provide the strength to the muscles while also lengthening them. Most Western exercise is considered "contractive" in nature. This means that with aerobics and strength training, the muscles and fascia tighten, harden and dry out. Yoga begins to reverse all of this. Yoga is an "expansive" system that opens up the joints, elongates the muscles and improves the quality of the fascia tissue surrounding the bones. Fascia is the largest group of tissue in the body. For optimal bone health the fascia needs to remain supple and "liquid-like". Western medical science has a poor concept of fascia and treats it like a waste product. By not only lengthening and strengthening muscles, yoga improves the quality of your fascia tissue, thus improving your overall bone health better than any other type of exercise.

THE TRUTH ABOUT OSTEOPOROSIS DRUGS

|
Millions of people have been subjected to taking medications for a condition of bone loss called "Osteoporosis" or "Osteopenia". Osteopenia is considered a beginning step to developing Osteoporosis. No matter what one is medically diagnosed with, the good news is that both of these conditions can be reversed and healed. The way these conditions are usually measured is by doing a bone density test. This is where only a small part of your entire body is measured, (for instance, a hip), and these results are then measured against a standard, (normally the bone density results of healthy, athletic, college-age women). The goal of these medically-sponsored tests are to get as many women to fail the test as possible, become diagnosed with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia. and then prescribed with bisphosphonate drugs for maintenance for a lifetime. One of the potentially harmful side-effects from bisphosphonate drugs like Fosomax, Boniva and Actonel is jaw bone death. While millions of people, (especially women), willingly subject themselves to these prescribed medications and companies like Merck, (maker of Fosomax), gross over 3 billion dollars a year from the sale of this drug, they can have very harmful results. Holistic doctor, Joseph Mercola, provides more insights in the following article.

Celebrities Paid to Lie to You About Health Issues
The United States of America is one of only two countries in the world that allow for the advertisement of drugs on television and in print media. Through close association between pharmaceutical lobbyists and members of Congress, laws have been passed to allow this to happen. The problem arises when many of these drug advertisements are found to be selling false claims and outright lies. When you insert a celebrity into the mix you have the potential for a very large problem. Celebrities are well-paid when they become a spokesperson for a particular product. Much of the time they do not have all the facts and are just told to read a script. Currently, there is a popular television commercial running on American television where actress Sally Field promotes the pharmaceutical drug, Boniva, to help treat Osteoporosis. Alan Graham has written a wonderful essay on why most of what Sally Field is paid to say just is not true. "Sally's Boniva Lie" An article by Alan Graham

The MYTH of OSTEOPOROSIS
 a book by Gillian Sanson
One of the
fear-factor selling points that many medical doctors make to their
elderly patients is that they are highly encouraged to take prescribed
drugs for bone loss to avoid harmful consequences of a fall and a hip
fracture. It is estimated that 35-50% of people over the age of 65 will
die within a year following a hip fracture. What they do not tell their patients is that the drugs that they are prescribing for Osteoporosis themselves have very harmful consequences. This brilliant book explores the topic of bone health and much more. Find out the truth about bone density tests, calcium supplements, proper diet, and a host of important information concerning your bones.
