Orthorexia Nervosa The Disease of Healthy Eating

While you might have heard of the eating disorders called "anorexia nervosa" and "bulimia", have you heard about "orthorexia nervosa"? While anorexia is the denial of food and bulimia is the overindulgence and purging of food, orthorexia is the disease of correct eating. Orthorexics are obsessed with the "quality" of their food. According to Dr. Steven Bratman, the creator of the term "orthorexia nervosa", there are many people who are addicted to proper eating. You might consider these people as food perfectionists who are consumed with thoughts of eating, shopping and planning meals of healthy food. Their lives are consumed with proper eating. A common belief is that the quality of our food is what is most important to our health. Often it is not. While you are obsessed with the proper consumption of food, the stress of this lifestyle might be what is making you sick or causing you to fall prey to a deadly disease. The healthiest of eaters are not necessarily the healthiest of people. This lifestyle is often found among vegetarians, vegans, and the yoga community at large. Are you using food as a way to stay in control and are now a health food junkie? |

Soy Bad
The Whole Soy Story The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food
 Book Click here
For the last twenty years or so a concerted effort has been made to convince the public that soy is a health food. It is not. The efforts of the soy industry have overwhelmed any common sense and have placed this vegetable in the status of "super miracle food". This is all hype and marketing at its best. Soy is loaded with many different toxins. These toxins range from phytoestrogens to protease inhibitors. The toxins in soy are absorbed into the human body through all sorts of ways (like soy milk, baby formula, tofu, soy bean oil, etc.) The get-rich-quick processed food industry has capitalized on this bean and has found a myriad of ways to process and sell it. This includes margarines, soy cheeses, soy burgers, soy protein isolate and so much more. Nearly 80% of the soybeans produced in the United States are now genetically modified as well (GMO). Many argue that Asian cultures have been eating soy for thousands of years and thriving off it. The difference is that they allow the soy to ferment, which reduces or eliminates most of the harmful toxins found in it. Modern Western food processors do not necessarily follow this procedure. Western food processors use many kinds of toxic products to extract the soy oil (including hexene and drano.) Non-fermented soy products like tofu, soy milk, soy ice cream etc. still remain toxic. Fermented varieties like natto, tempeh, and miso follow more historic traditions and are acceptable. Well-known health advocate, Dr. Joseph Mercola, has much to say about the dumping of soy onto the unbeknownst American consumer. You can read his well-researched findings by clicking the link below.

Dr. Timothy O'Shea, noted wholistic chiropractor, also has a lot to say about the soy bean in his article called,
"The Magic Bean". Click here to learn more
Soy Online Service is a strong advocate against the use of soy products. There are many documented articles and this organization presents a strong case why soy should be avoided.

King Corn
 DVD
America is awash in corn. The Midwest farm fields yield millions of acres of corn each year and that corn must go somewhere. Most of what the average American eats has some relationship to corn. This stunning documentary traces the corn trail from the farm to the supermarket. Corn is made into corn starch, high fructose corn syrup, corn oil, corn chips, and much more. The average fast food restaurant survives from cheap government subsidized corn. Live stock are fed corn (even though it rots their stomach out in 3 months), producing corn-fed beef and ham. This corn-fed meat has nine times the fat content of similar grass-fed cows and pigs. Corn syrup has also replaced sugar in sodas while corn oil is often used to fry french fried potatoes. The only problem is that while Iowa farmers are getting rich on this government financed campaign, America is getting fat and dying because of corn. Corn is difficult for the body to digest, has very little food value in it, and isn't really even a vegetable-it is a starch. Learn the politics, economics, and health hazards to an American population that has invested in corn as its primary food source. This dvd is available for purchase or rental at many rental outlets, (like Netflix or Blockbuster online).

The Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup

Sugar was once blamed as the evil to avoid. In actuality, sugar would be considered a health food compared to the new sweetener on the block called high fructose corn syrup. Made in a laboratory from genetically modified corn, high fructose corn syrup has now replaced sugar as the sweetener of choice for most commercially packaged and processed foods. In fact, nearly 70% of the items found in your typical grocery store now contain high fructose corn syrup. Going by many different names like corn syrup, fructose and HFCS, this product is full of empty calories and is partially to blame for the obesity epidemic in America. In addition, diabetes is at record levels due in part to the high fructose corn syrup takeover. High fructose corn syrup is nearly twenty times sweeter than sugar and much less expensive. Is it no wonder why the processed food and beverage industry has enthusiastically embraced this artificial sweetener?
