HEALTH OR FITNESS?
In the past few decades we have been bombarded with a media blitz of promotional campaigns trying to convince us that fitness and health are the same thing. They are not. Despite multi-million dollar advertising endorsements, celebrity fitness videos, the fashion industry, and medical scientists, fitness and health remain primarily at opposite ends of the spectrum. Fitness is about shaping your body to look a certain way. The fitness industry is a multi-billion dollar industry designed to change your outer appearance and has little to do with your over all health. While many popular fitness magazines and television promotions claim that a hard "six-pack" abdomen, firm buttocks, and 17 inch biceps are the epitome of health-they are not. In fact, the fitness industry is more closely aligned with the beauty and cosmetic industry than with the health industry. Click here to read the entire article |

PILATES IS NOT YOGA
Here we go again. Call a spade a spade. One of the latest fitness crazes is the practice of Pilates. Often endorsed by celebrities, taught at gyms and yoga studios, Pilates has become a staple in a culture obsessed with appearance. Has anyone ever stopped to question what Pilates is actually doing and should it really be taught at a yoga studio? Not until now. Pilates is primarily a fitness practice designed to shape the body. While often promoted as a way to "cure" back problems, reduce "stress", and make the body generally more healthy, it does none of these. While there is merit to Pilates as a way to tone the body and burn calories, it should not be confused with yoga, a health practice, or a way to reduce stress. Pilates, for the most part, is not compatible being taught in places like yoga studios and should be left for the gym, where fitness is the key component. Click here to read the entire article |

THE CORE MYTH
The whole notion of hardening and tightening one's core is a primary element in a modern day fitness practice. Unfortunately, the fitness world has obscured the entire concept of the core and has neglected the evolutionary and natural aspects of the core. The fitness model teaches that the core is like a series of building blocks that need to be strengthened and tightened down to maintain health and stability in the body. This could not be farther from the truth. After nearly 5000 years of existence the yoga practice teaches us that the core is an energetic center of the body. This center incudes the primary chakras and the kundalini energy pathway. When practicing yoga a key element is to free up the core energy, which helps bring energetic and emotional stability to the body/mind/spirit. The fitness model has been oblivious to this central energy channel and its approach will begin to negate and block this primary source of core energy. Fitness kills the core while yoga enlivens it.
