Bishop C. Judson Child Heritage Circle in the Works

"For it is in giving that we receive and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life."
--
St. Francis

Thanks to the generous actions of two Mikell supporters, we are in the process of creating a society to honor those who remember Mikell Camp and Conference Center in their will.  Members of The Bishop C. Judson Child Heritage Circle name Mikell as a benefactor in their wills.  Mikell recently received its inaugural donation of $40,000 from the estate of a founding member.  Designating a portion of your estate to Mikell is a concrete and meaningful way to further the ministry that takes place here.  Please consider adding Mikell to your will to help this ministry blossom for future generations!  For more information, contact Rev. Ken Struble, Executive Director, at 706.886.7515 or kstruble@alltel.net.

  Annual Campaign Update
We've received a strong response from Mikell's 2007 Annual Campaign so far this year!  You can view the list of donors for the first quarter of 2007, as well as all Annual Campaign 2006 donors, on our website, www.campmikell.com, under "Mikell News".  And if you haven't yet responded to the annual campaign, please do so today!  (You can contact Amanda Segers, Office Manager, to make a credit card donation, or send a check to Mikell at 237 Camp Mikell Court, Toccoa, GA 30577.) The Annual Campaign makes a tremendous difference each year in helping Mikell to pay off its pool debt and maintain a beloved and aging facility.

(Note: many of the Annual Campaign letters were returned for us.  If you did not receive one, please contact us so that we can correct your address.)

  Our Wish List

  Summer Camp Registration Numbers Up
   From 2006

Now is the time to register online for a Mikell summer camp session!  You'll find a list of sessions offered, a description of each, and a link to online registration on our website, www.campmikell.com.  Summer camp 2007 registration is running strong, up nearly 15% from this time last year, with 537 youth currently signed up!  So register soon to reserve a spot in your preferred session.

Share the Mikell Magic, our new referral incentive program, is also gathering speed.  When a current camper recruits a new camper, both receive $25 off their registration fees.  There's no upper limit to how many campers you can recruit or how much credit your can earn-in fact, recruiting 15 campers will pay for a traditional session!  Take part in the ministry of Mikell by sharing the amazing camp experience with someone else and earn some bucks in the process.

St. Joseph Craft Center Opens for 7th Folk Art Weekend

by Elizabeth Allan

More than 130 participantssampled one of twelve art areas ranging from tapestry to outdoor grilling at the seventh annual Folk School Weekend March 2-4, 2007 at Mikell Conference Center. Six of the offerings were housed in the new St. Joseph the Carpenter Craft Center, which was dedicated during the closing Eucharist. This building is furnished with state-of-the-art, new equipment for weaving, woodturning, stained glass, tile mosaic, scroll saw and pottery. The funding and building of the St. Joseph's Center was spearheaded by the Work of Our Hands, the nonprofit arts support organization. The new art center is situated behind the Camp Mikell dorms on Boys Hill. Plans are being made for its availability throughout the year for use by parishes and other groups.

Come check out this fantastic addition during your next visit to Mikell!

Watkins Christian Foundation Honors Mikell

Many thanks go to the Watkins Christian Foundation for their generous grant of $10,000 awarded in March 2007!  This marks the fourth year that Mikell has received this grant, which is dedicated to the reduction of the pool loan debt.  We have currently repaid over $130,000 of the debt incurred with the construction of the new pool (our loans totaled nearly $390,000)!  Come ready to swim and enjoy this state-of-the-art pool complex during your next visit to Mikell.

Meet a Mikeller
This section is dedicated to introducing you to the Mikell staff "family", so that you're more familiar with us before you even set foot on the Mikell campus!

This month, meet Amanda Segers, Mikell Office Manager extraordinaire!  She is one of the first people you'll speak with when scheduling a visit to Mikell.

How do you take care of Mikell?
I handle all of the reservations for Conferences, Blue Ridge groups, and private retreats.  I enter and pay all of the bills for Mikell.  I work with our Accountant for the Mikell budget and I work with our payroll company to pay our employees.  I answer the phone, weekend host, manage the store and lend a helping hand to all departments here as needed.

How long have you worked at Mikell?
10 years on April 11th !!!!

What are some things that you love about Mikell?
I love the variety of people that come here, and the energy that our guests give and receive while at Mikell.  I love the natural scenery of our property as it changes weekly and seasonally.

Tell us a little about yourself.
Family is very important to me.  I like how Mikell has its own family.  I like to hang out with friends and family, whether we are shopping, dining out, walking or driving country roads.  I like to read at night and talk all day...ha ha!

Is there anything else you'd like to share with Mikell guests and supporters?
We all enjoy our jobs here at Mikell, and we hope that our guests see that.  Everyone who comes here is important and we like to share the Mikell magic, so if someone makes a joke with you, laugh with him or her and poke fun too.  It makes our lives more enjoyable!!  Try your best to enjoy your time at Mikell if you have any questions, ask a staff person.  We are all here to help!
Did You Know...?

Recent research shows that camps represent one of the best opportunities many youth have outside the family for experiencing supportive adult relationships.  Read about this and more at the American Camp Association website, www.acacamps.org, or visit their website dedicated to parents of campers: www.campparents.org.  Mikell has been an accredited member of ACA since 1999 and regularly submits to a rigorous review process (over 300 standards) of its operation, ranging from staff qualifications and training to emergency management.

Enjoy your day!

Sincerely,
Kat Ballard
