Letter from the Editor

The unofficial end of summer has arrived, which means kids are back in school and summer movers are finally getting settled at their new duty station. It seems that September has become a bit like January, where we get back into a routine and find a new normal. Whether you made a PCS move this summer, or spent the lazy days relaxing, we hope that your summer was an enjoyable one.

While educational institutions open their doors for another academic year, we wanted to highlight the incredible opportunities there are for military service members and their families to receive tuition assistance. Please be sure to read our Featured Article to find out more about the Post 9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program.

We have shared another segment of our Real Estate Photography series this month and the infographics found within the article can be found on our Real Estate Photography Pinterest board. Repin them to your boards for the next time you need guidance for taking pictures of your home for your MilitaryByOwner advertisement.

For our military families that have beloved, four-legged members of their family, we have a great article this month from our Business Advertiser, Air Animal Pet Movers, regarding the challenges of moving with pets. Dr. Woolf offers some great advice for both CONUS and OCONUS moves. We are happy to have this wonderful business advertising with us.

We have a number of businesses that have started advertising with us in the last month, so we are pleased to introduce them to you in our "Welcome" segment. We appreciate the opportunity to work with the wonderful companies that offer their services to our military community.

We are thrilled to have Scott AFB and Fort Carson join our
Top 20 bases this month. Our Top 20 is comprised of the base pages on our site that are viewed the most during the previous month.  If you have a home to sell or rent, especially in one of these areas, please consider advertising your home on MilitaryByOwner.

The Yellow Ribbon and More: Tuition Assistance for Military Families

Michele Allen
MilitaryByOwner Advertising, Inc.

College tuition is skyrocketing! Smart military families are utilizing all of the programs available to limit the burden of weighty student loans.  Since the introduction of the original GI Bill in 1944, there has not been a tuition assistance program more accessible than the Post 9-11 GI Bill and its partner the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Congress, in the summer of 2008, approved an expansion of benefits beyond the current G.I. Bill program for military veterans serving since September 11, 2001.  Beginning in August 2009, recipients became eligible for greatly expanded benefits, or the full cost of any public college in their state. The new bill also provides a housing allowance and $1,000 a year stipend for books, among other benefits.

Most significantly, there is a special provision of the program that allows career service members to share their remaining GI Bill (education) benefits with immediate family members. The key factor is whether or not the member has used any of his or her GI Bill in the past; only unused benefits can be transferred. This means that if the member has used 12 months of his or her GI Bill, then there is only 24 months of benefit left to share.

Relocation Tips
The PCS Pet - Pet Relocation Tips

By Walter M Woolf, V.M.D
Director - Pet Moving Services

Pet Relocation within the USA

PCS orders usually come through for the Summer months and occasionally for the winter. The summer of 2012 has had many challenges for the relocating military family, who happen to be pet owners, of which there are many.

Within the continental USA, relocating pet owners on PCS orders are faced with many challenges as they move from base to base. The summer of 2012 has had the pet owner on PCS orders faced with more challenges than usual. Higher gas prices, breed restrictions for the Brachycephalic breeds (English Bulldog, Boxer, French Bulldog, pit bulls, etc), along with the commercial passenger airlines embargoing and restricting the acceptance of pets from mid May to mid September has forced many families to drive to their new assignment.

Airline consolidation (the merger of Continental & United) has reduced commercial passenger airline capacity, along with many North American cities faced with temperature restrictions and embargoes this past summer due to record-breaking heat waves.

Flying the family pet was once easy. Many pet owners have been forced to leave the pet with friends or family, waiting for the cooler days of autumn 2012 to fly their pets, or have been forced into driving their pets cross country.

Air Animal Pet Movers, the Tampa, Florida based provider of pet moving solutions to relocating families since 1977, has met the challenges working with the PCS family and their pets to arrange either airline transport or ground transport, or mixtures of each, to help the relocating military family.

PCS orders to Hawaii and Guam require sufficient planning and preparation time to meet the entry protocols for the island bases. Microchip identification, Rabies vaccinations, along with the required FAVN-OIE Rabies antibody tests are the beginning steps of the process to successfully move pets from CONUS to the islands of Hawaii and Guam.

Pet Relocation across the World

The aspects of moving a pet globally when the military family has PCS orders has many challenges. With temperature restrictions imposed by two (2) American flag passenger carriers (American Airlines & Delta Airlines) through the months of May thru September, traditional summer PCS pet travel has a severe damper placed upon having the pet accompany the family on its overseas assignment.

The timing of microchip implants for identification, the follow up Rabies vaccinations, and the issuing of the international health certificates (within 10 days of travel from the US to the overseas assignment), determines when the pet can relocate.

If the military family on PCS orders has left the family's pet with either family or friends and are now stationed overseas, Air Animal's experienced pet moving specialists can arrange the transport of your "pets left behind" from most major US cities.

Pet shipments into Germany required the necessary EU forms for entry; the good news for pets entering Germany is that international health certificates issued by military base veterinarians do not require USDA export endorsement; yet pets entering other EU member states; e.g. England, Belgium, Italy, Spain, etc do require the USDA export endorsement for proper entry.

Please Note: pet shipments to Japan and Okinawa require pre-export planning, microchip implantation, followed by Rabies vaccinations (two for Japan/Okinawa), the required FAVN-OIE Rabies antibody testing, the international health certificate with USA export endorsements, including the 40-day pre-export/import notification, and the special documentation for entry into Japan/Okinawa.

An Inside Look at Real Estate Photography

MilitaryByOwner Advertising, Inc.

A couple of months ago, we examined the "The Dos and Don'ts of Real Estate Photography" where we addressed  different techniques to photograph the outside of your home. While the photograph of the outside of your home is the one that potential tenants or buyers see first, they are not likely to move any further if the inside of the home is a wreck.

The introduction of the Internet was a game changer for the real estate market, creating the opportunity for owners to market their homes through a variety of advertising websites. As a result, this is now the number one way that owners choose to showcase their home, bringing to mind the old adage that "you only have one opportunity to make a good first impression". If an interested party views less than flattering photos of your home, they will move on to the next home that is available. Particularly in a market where there is an abundance of homes to choose from, you need to make sure that your home stands out from your competition.

The best part about the following tips, is that they are easy and take very little time or effort.

Navy Paralympic Athlete Inspires Others to Compete

By Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr.

American Forces Press Service

LONDON, Aug. 28, 2012 - The opportunity to compete in Paralympic sports allows people with disabilities to re-establish confidence, assist their rehabilitation and revitalize their lives, a member of the U.S. Paralympic Team said here today.

Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder, right, a member of the U.S. Paralympic Swimming Team, is interviewed by Army Sgt. Abigail Waldrop during team processing at the University of East London campus prior to the start of the Paralympic Games, in London, Aug. 28. Snyder advocates wounded warriors using sports to aid their rehabilitation and boost confidence. DOD photo by U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr.

Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder, a member of the 2012 U.S. Paralympic swimming team, took time from team processing at the University of East London campus to encourage wounded warriors to use sports to help them recover, both mentally and physically, from injury.

"Blindness was a tough hand to deal with," Snyder said. "Everything I tried, to start with, I was not very good at. Cane-walking was difficult. Cooking in the kitchen is difficult. Picking out a color-matching outfit is very difficult.

"Things that are relatively menial become problematic without the use of your sight," he continued. "So to hop in the pool was something that came very organically to me, having been a competitive swimmer in the past."

The Navy lieutenant is one of 227 athletes participating in the Paralympic Games, a multi-sport event for athletes with physical, mental and sensorial disabilities held every four years following the Summer Olympics.

Snyder expressed satisfaction from competing and being successful, and how it aided in his recovery after being blinded while attempting to disable an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan on Sept. 7, 2011.

"It was really easy for me to hop in, and get back and forth and feel good at something again," he said. "It was really good for my rehab, [it] really built a lot of confidence forward, and ... all the successes that I have had in Paralympic swimming have given me that feeling of relevance again."

Being able to represent his country in a different manner also gives him confidence in the other avenues of life, he said.

"So I'm a huge advocate for the idea of wounded warriors getting back into sport," he added. "It gives you that feeling of relevance and that feeling of success again. And again, it's not relegated to just sports. It trickled down to other avenues of life."

Snyder said he is transitioning from the Navy to a "purple" world, and swimming has greatly increased his self-confidence.

The Navy lieutenant will swim in the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 400-meter freestyle and in the 100-meter backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly. He'll also compete in the 200-meter individual medley, swimming each stroke for 50 meters.

Snyder said he captured records for the 50-meter backstroke and 50-meter butterfly during the U.S. Paralympic swimming trials in Bismarck, N.D., in June. "We definitely have our eyes on some other marks throughout the games," he said, "so hopefully we'll be able to drop some time and do some good stuff."

Snyder said he began swimming competitively largely as a part of his rehab.

"I was injured last September," he added, "and at the suggestion of my old swim coach, and a couple of other entities -- the Athletic Blind Association and some coaching down in Augusta, Ga. -- they thought I should get into swimming just to kind of build my confidence back up."

Snyder said once he identified the Paralympic Games as a viable option, he fully committed himself to being the best.

"I took it relatively seriously, and moved to Baltimore and started training with Brian Loeffler, who's the head [swimming] coach at Loyola University," he said. "He and I have been working pretty hard over the last few months, and we've been able to make some really good gains in the pool. So [I'm] really looking forward to this opportunity to compete. I think I'm even faster than I was back in June for the trials meet."

Snyder again credited competitive swimming for the return of his confidence and a feeling of relevancy.

"Doing Paralympic swimming ... has allowed me to feel confident when I move into a room and have to a present a proposal or something like that," he said. "It gives me that feeling of strength, that feeling of confidence I had when I was in the military.

"And it kind of reiterates the idea that I am the person I used to be," he continued. "I just have to figure out a new way to get around. So that's what sports affords me: that confidence moving into my new jobs and my regular life as a blind person now."
