| Letter from the Editor | | The official end of summer is still a few weeks away, but now that schools across the country have started a new academic year, the easy, breezy summer feel has certainly given way to a more structured lifestyle. We hope that all of our customers had a wonderful summer and that those who recently moved are quickly getting settled at their new duty station.
While there is certainly a "peak" military move season, we all know that military service members move throughout the year. Background check, credit check, character references, and a list of your last 5 addresses; does this sound familiar? If you have ever rented a home or apartment, you are likely familiar with the number of hoops you must jump through to become a "qualified" tenant.
But have you ever entertained the thought of asking your potential landlord to fulfill these same requirements?
It may seem odd to contemplate turning the tables on your prospective landlord, but in this "new" real estate market, it may not be a request that is entirely unreasonable.
Certainly you have heard the stories, or maybe even experienced firsthand, the nightmare of renting a home from someone, only to find out later that the home was going into foreclosure. There is also the dreaded experience of renting a home from someone who turns out to be a terrible landlord.
As a tenant it may be worthwhile to do your own background check, credit check and character review. If a landlord is in good standing with their mortgage and has a reputable relationship with previous tenants, then you will be able to garner this information just through asking the right questions.
As a long time landlord, I have utilized various services that help me evaluate potential tenants, but the number one resource I always use is my gut. If something doesn't seem right, then maybe it is worth looking into further.
Even when you are the tenant, it is important to protect your interests and well being, so make sure you have an open dialog with your prospective landlord. And if you have a gut feeling that something may not be right, then consider asking the tough questions. This may just save you a lot of heartache. The relationship between landlord and tenant is an important one, so make sure that it is a perfect fit!

USAA and NFL Team to Honor America's Armed Forces 
Multi-year sponsorship will engage fans in shared legacies, traditions of football and the military
SAN ANTONIO and NEW YORK - USAA, which provides insurance and more to the military community, and the National Football League (NFL) announced today that USAA is the first Official Military Appreciation Sponsor of the NFL, beginning with the 2011 season.
USAA and the NFL will honor and thank U.S. military members for their service, and engage fans of America's favorite sport to show their appreciation of the military through several programs that will be announced throughout the season. USAA also will become the Official Insurance Sponsor of the NFL.
USAA's designation as the Official Military Appreciation Sponsor of the NFL is unique. Although many teams have individual military appreciation activities, this is the first national, League-wide corporate sponsorship in all of sports to honor and thank all members of the military, past and present.
"We look forward to millions of football fans joining us in saluting the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces." said Joe Robles, USAA president and CEO.
