July is the month in which we celebrate America's birthday with our family and friends, but it is a great time to pause to remember our fellow Americans that Patriotic Houseare on distant shores fighting for the very freedoms we hold so dear! Once the fireworks have faded and the tables have cleared, it is still important to take the time to remember the troops and their families that couldn't spend this holiday together. Take a look at our Featured Site segment this month for an easy and fun way to show that you care!

If you are still making your way to your new duty station or are taking time out for a summer vacation, please be sure to check out our Military Life segments with some great specials from Blue Star Museums as well as some nationwide discounts for military families. We are still in the busy military move season! With over 5 Million page views in June, we are hoping this kind of traffic translates into great success for our customers. If there is anything we can do to make your experience of advertising with us better, please let us know.

Stage it to Sell

Many homeowners adore their homes.  They have made it their own with personal touches, favorite colors, family photos, indoor plants growing wild, keepsakes, seasonal items and collections.  Other homeowners have simply Stage it to Sellgotten used to small cracks, a missing tile, a light that doesn't work, an occasional drip, faded paint and worn in carpet or flooring. As Stagers, we have entered homes wherein an overgrown tree greeted us at the door, was named 'sis' and needed it's own room.  The homeowner was proud of her green thumb, but the plant was the only thing the buyers could remember.  Another example would be the shrine to family photos, saints, precious moments, nutcrackers, or snow globe collections- pack'em up and move'em out.

Upon walking up to your house, cut and edge your grass, trim overgrown bushes, add colorful pots of flowers, change up rusted light fixtures, replace bulbs, and clean or paint the front door.  No Realtor enjoys using a machete' to enter and show a home.

Something a homeowner may not notice about their home is a distinct odor. After living for many years in Connecticut, my parents have no clue their home is a bit musty.  Plug in air fresheners are marvelous!  There are huge advances in the air freshener department, check them out, no Lysol please.

Keep in mind, more is not better, it is simply more.  Staging is showcasing, sellers need to delete the clutter and define the space.  If you love the home and just don't want to make any changes to enhance it, chances are you will get to keep it!

Wounded Warrior Project Chooses USAA Bank for Co-Branded Credit Card

Posted on Jun 28, 2010 | Category: News Releases

To raise awareness and help provide funding for the needs of severely injured service men and women, USAA Savings Bank and the Wounded Warrior Project will join forces to offer a credit card that helps fund WWP programs to support service members with traumatic war injuries. Wounded Warrior Project

Wounded warriors and their family members along with WWP supporters and contributors can now proudly carry the USAA Wounded Warrior Project World MasterCard®.

In addition to the co-branded credit card honoring wounded warriors, USAA announced that recipients of the Traumatic Servicemember's Group Life Insurance benefit will receive a free consultation with a USAA Certified Financial Planner™.

Wounded Warrior Credit Card

TSGLI is the government-provided lump-sum payment of $25,000 to $100,000 for certain combat-related injuries. This program, originally championed by WWP, is designed to help injured service members and their families with financial burdens associated with recovering from a severe injury.

"Providers like USAA who believe in our mission of honoring and empowering wounded warriors allow us to further enhance our unique programs and services for the wounded and their families," said WWP executive director, Steve Nardizzi. "Their vital support will help ensure that this generation of warriors will be prepared with the tools essential to not just survive their injuries but to thrive and achieve personal and professional success."

"USAA's mission is helping military and their families achieve and maintain financial security, and that's especially important for those who suffer such severe injuries in service to our country," said retired Army Maj. Gen. Joe Robles, USAA president and CEO. "USAA and WWP care deeply about our service members and their loved ones, and this new relationship will allow us both to help wounded warriors transition from a hospital bed to an independent and fulfilling life."

Free financial advice has long been a benefit provided by USAA; however, this tailored support is available to all TSGLI recipients. TSGLI recipients should call USAA at 1-800-531-1045 and indicate they've received TSGLI to receive their financial consultation.

According to WWP more than 37,000 of our nation's armed forces have been physically wounded during the current military conflicts. Hundreds of thousands more are estimated to be recovering from invisible wounds of war, including post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression and traumatic brain injury. WWP assists wounded warriors and their families through a holistic approach to their recovery, providing programs and services to aid their physical rehabilitation and improve their mental health and well-being.

About Wounded Warrior Project

The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors. Its purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service members, to help severely injured men and women aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. WWP is a national, nonpartisan organization headquartered in JacksonvilleFla.

Blue Star Museums

By Molly Blake

Neither flash floods nor walnut-size hail nor flat tires will keep Susan Petersen from stopping at The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco this summer.  Blue Star Museum Photo

Susan and her family are moving from Washington DC to California and seeing the history behind Disney, vintage drawings, and even catching a screening of a Disney favorite at the museum is a welcome break from Mother Nature and the monotony of their cross-country drive.

"A PCS can be fairly stressful and tough on the kids," said Petersen. "But having something special to look forward to makes it easier."

That something special is more accessible than ever this summer since more than 750 museums in all 50 states, including the Walt Disney Family Museum, are opening their doors, free of charge, to military families thanks to Blue Star Museums - a partnership between Blue Star Families, a non-profit organization dedicated to military families, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Museums like The Art Institute of Chicago have joined the rolls as have hundreds of novel spots like The Dallas Museum of Art, G.WIZ, The Science Museum in Florida, The Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, and Oklahoma's Toy and ActionFigureMuseum. And forget dusty sculptures and stuffy, silent walks through art galleries. Patrons can experience a spine-tingling sky-high IMAX theater, explore the physics and wonder of giant bubbles, battle a snarling dinosaur and even watch as famed children's book characters are brought to life.

In short, these days museums, galleries, exhibits and exploratoriums are dizzying and thrilling and because research consistently shows that exposing young children to the arts benefits communication, critical reasoning, and social skills, Heather Faulkner, an army spouse, will take full advantage of Blue Star Museums.

"My son just graduated from kindergarten, and he's in that stage where his mind is a sponge," said Faulkner. "The learning process starts in the museum and continues even after we've left."

Faulkner and her children, ages six and three, are stationed in Hampton Roads, Virginia.  She plans on taking mini excursions this summer up and down the eastern seaboard and looks forward to spending time as a family, something she remembers fondly from her own childhood.

And because museums can be expensive (a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright's Pope Leighey House in Northern Virginia would normally cost more than $30.00 for a family of five), Petersen said, the program is a boon for families who are PCSing. Perhaps more importantly for families with a deployed parent, Blue Star Museums provides a much-needed respite.

Meanwhile, Faulkner is wondering if perhaps seeing Monet and Da Vinci up close and personal this summer will expose her kids' hidden talents.

"I wouldn't call them budding Picassos, but both of my children love drawing and telling stories about their pictures," said Faulkner. "They are definitely more artistic than I am!"

Blue Star Museums is in full swing and runs through Labor Day, September 6, 2010.  For more information, visit www.bluestarfam.org.

** Read a museum-inspired book like "Dogs' Night" by Meredith Hooper before or after a visit.  "Dogs' Night," is a story about dogs who slip out of their famous London art museum paintings at night and wreak havoc around the museum until one romp lands the pooches in the wrong paintings. The curators are befuddled! Ask kids if they can spot animals in paintings and have them draw a picture of what would happen if the animal escaped!

For an interactive map of participating museums, visit www.nea.gov. And be sure and check out the Blue Star Museums blog at http://www.arts.gov/bluestarblog/ to see first hand stories and photos!

While you are in the Virginia area, maybe you should venture north for a visit to our Nation's Capital. Only about 2-3 hours from Williamsburg, you will find more to do in DC then you have time to do it. And with most of the attractions being free, again it can be an affordable vacation for the family. With the numerous military installations in the DC, Virginia and Maryland area, you should also have no problem finding nice, affordable lodging.  A good place to start is with Bolling Air Force Base in DC or Ft. Belvoir in Virignia.

Hawaii

You can get great deals on either end of California! Let's start down south in San Diego. Once again, you have Sea World there, so you can take advantage of the free ticket offer and enjoy a day with Shamoo. With the gorgeous beaches, fabulous restaurants and numerous entertainment options, San Diego is an all-inclusive destination. There are several bases in the San Diego area that offer lodging. Take a look at the Navy Lodge North Island NAS or the Navy Lodge San Diego Naval Base

Camp Pendleton is another fabulous resource for great billeting! The base offers two different beach cottages for rent which have direct beach access and incredible ocean views. They also have a large number of full service RV beach front campsites at both locations. This is a summer treat that is hard to beat!

I wanted to provide feedback that working with the MBO staff has been outstanding. When I couldn't figure out pictures or changing status, you were right there helping me! I didn't have to be good at computer tech and your staff even offered to upload pictures for me when I was having trouble.

I have recommended you to all my friends who have not been successful at selling their homes that they should try renting with MBO. I had great response, several transferring military asking me to rent to them even after I had already rented the house. There is definitely a demand in our area for reasonably priced homes. I learned about you through a Captain at work after he had great success renting out his home and I keep telling him that he has solved my financial strain by telling me about MBO - I will no longer have two house payments!

Thank you and I will use you again in the future!
