How to Beat the Holiday
Blues
The year-end holidays are
approaching. Many people experience this time of year as a time of fond
reflection;
however, for
some, holidays are emotionally difficult. Unfortunate negative experiences
while growing up and significant losses like the death of a loved one, divorce
or separation including the breakup of a significant relationship plunges them
into the well of Holiday Blues.
Here are some tips for beating the
Holiday Blues:
1. Do something new. Doing something
as simple as getting new Christmas decorations, or changing the color of
your bathroom or kitchen accessories, or if affordable and you've never done
it before, taking a holiday trip, can make a pleasant
difference.
2. Be a participator in the holiday
celebrations rather than a spectator. Why not give a holiday
party?
3. Be a blessing to others, who are
less fortunate if you don't have local family (or if you do have
one).
Serve them
Christmas dinner. This helps you to realize that you are
blessed.
4. Practice self-care. Don't overextend yourself
physically or financially.
5. Express your feelings. Talk about
your feelings (especially negative ones) to someone you trust (friend,
relative, minister or therapist). I strongly stress the importance of not
harboring negative emotions that can produce anxiety, depression and stress.
I call negative emotions "stuff". Everyone has "stuff" whether he or she
is honest enough to admit or not. Deal with your
"stuff".
6. Enjoy the
holidays.
7. Remember to say a Prayer of
Thanks. Be thankful for the Divine blessings you received in
2007,
and the Divine
blessings and possibilities you expect to receive in
2008.
8. Repeat this affirmation:
"I am more than a
conqueror". Saint
Paul
