According to Bolles (2005) there are two kinds of career-search: 1) Traditional Career-Search; 2) Life-Changing Career-Search. |
The Traditional Career-Search
You are looking to remain in the same career type, you just want to be able to meet your basic needs, and you want to do a quick and almost effortless career-search. The steps you take to do your quick search are: 1) You prepare your resume; 2) Post your resume on an Internet site (Monster, CareerBuilder, etc.), and sleep while the Internet search engines match your search criteria to prospective employers' search criteria; 3) You respond to an opening in the newspaper classifieds by faxing your resume. |
| The Life-Changing Career-Search
You want a major shift in careers. Perhaps you are searching for your "dream career". This type of career-search requires time and effort. First, you should define specifically what you are looking for: Is it a change in occupation? Is it a change in the kinds of people you work with? Is it a change of career that meets your goals and values? Or, is it a change in salary? Second, you must decide if you want a career change in your occupation, a career change in your field, or do you want to change both your occupation and your field. Finally you should decide what gifts, talents, and skills you have to offer an employer, where you would like to use your skills, and how you plan to approach the organizations that match your interest and that have position openings.
