Conferences and Meetings
  • The 5th National Advanced Practice Neonatal Nurses Conference, "Building the Evidence: Supporting the Practice" will be held in Miami, Florida, April 24-26, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency. Early registration is available until March 20, 2008, and regular registration ends April 16, 2008. Register online by clicking here.   • The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is holding their annual convention "Many Voices, One Mission" in Los Angeles, California, from June 21-25, 2008. For more information, visit the AWHONN website.

Educational Resource for Pediatric Tracheostomy Care

Creative Force Video Productions is offering free online video viewing of a 30-minute patient education program produced to help families with tracheostomy care for their child, called "Breath of Life-A Caregiver's Guide to Pediatric Tracheostomy Care." The full program is available here.*

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

The FDA provides a monthly online video news show for health care professionals called Patient Safety News. This program provides safety alerts, recalls, new product approvals, and tips on protecting patients. Recent stories include "Rare Side-Effect of Codeine in Nursing Mothers" and "Recall of Braun Normal Saline Flush Syringes." To sign up, click here.

Bloodgas.org

Bloodgas.org is a knowledge site that provides practical information about blood gas and critical testing. The latest issue includes topics such as diagnosing sepsis, fetal-to-neonatal transition, and the latest developments on lactate. Call for Papers & Posters

5th National Advanced Practice Conference in Miami, Florida

This year, for the first time, the 5th National Advanced Practice Neonatal Nurses Conference is seeking abstracts for podium presentations related to the conference theme, "Building the Evidence: Supporting the Practice." Two topics have been selected for the 20-minute presentations: 1) Ventilation: How do you ventilate very low birth weight babies to optimize lung volume and prevent lung injury?; and 2) Nutrition: How do you feed low birth weight infants? Clinical, case study, and research poster abstracts are also welcome. Abstracts for both the podium and poster presentations are due February 15, 2008. Grants, Scholarships, and Awards

Foundation for Neonatal Research and Education (FNRE)

The FNRE is a non-profit organization that offers scholarships and grants to prepare neonatal nurses for the future by strengthening nursing practice through research, evaluation of interventions, and patient outcomes. ANN supports this organization by generously donating one dollar for every membership. Visit their website for more information.

2008 Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Research Grant

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) invites health care professionals with an interest in neonatal resuscitation to submit a proposal for up to $25,000 through the NRP Research Grant Program. Applicants must submit intent for application to the NRP Steering Committee by May 2, 2008. For the application and more information, click here.

The Global Network for Women's and Children's Health Research

The Global Network for Women's and Children's Health Research is a collaborative effort where international, multidisciplinary teams of investigators research ways to improve the health of women and children in developing countries. Safe pregnancy, nutrition, and neonatal resuscitation are examples of the team's current efforts. Register on their website, and receive free research updates and publications.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Neonatal Research Network

In 1986, the NICHD developed the Neonatal Research Network to conduct multicentered clinical trials and observational studies in neonatal medicine. Participating centers include New England Medical Center, Yale, Duke, Stanford, Brown, Tufts, and Emory Universities. The Neonatal Research Network supports a registry for very low birth weight infants (less than 1,500 gm) and has a standardized follow-up program of extremely low birth weight infants (less than 1,000 gm). Important information regarding the morbidity and mortality statistics of these patients is forthcoming.  Information for families is also available at this website and includes sections concerning development and immunizations, a glossary of NICU terms, and more. ANN has partnered with 99nicu.org to provide neonatal health professionals with a place to post questions, share conference dates and venues, and read current abstracts from Archives of Diseases in Childhood, The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Acta Paediatrica.
