The idea of communicating intimately with and being
in a state of heightened, intimate receptivity has
always been a driving force in my teaching Yoga. It
is this definition of "commune" that brings me to the
idea of mutual respect. I give to you all that I am
as a yogi without barriers or pretense. I offer my years
of experience in exchange for the ability to come to the
space of community among like minds. This to me is
the essence of yoga and life. When we take without
giving, the experience is hollow and does not lead us
towards mutual respect. So, to my teacher I give in
ways that go beyond monetary payment and verbal
gratitude. I give by my constant dedication to the
practice, by honoring his words as, "the way", and
ultimately by seeing him as my source of light and
inspiration on the path of yoga. I know too, when I look
in his eyes that I have given to him and we have come
to a place of intimate, mutual receptivity. A place
where we have joined (yoked) as like minds, a place
that is Yoga.
It is understood that the craft of loving-kindness is the
everyday face of wisdom and the ordinary hand of
compassion. This wisdom face, this hand of mercy, is
never realized alone, but always with and through
others. . . . there is no personal enlightenment, this
awakening occurs in the activity of loving relationship.
