Another Tax Law for Annuities

As part of the Reconciliation act of 2010, H.R. 4872 “fixer bill” will impose a 3.8% tax on investment income to raise revenue for Medicare. The tax will apply to those with a modified adjusted gross income of over $200k for individuals, and $250k for couples. This tax will apply to all income including income from savings and investments, interest, dividends, royalty income, rental income, income derived from passive activities, net gain from the disposition of property and annuities. There are varying opinions on if this new tax will only affect the upper class, or if it will also affect the middle class since there is no provision for inflation. Because of the tax deferred benefits and ability to choose what year to be taxed, annuities remain an important vehicle in the planning process.

Simple Selling Tips

The Marketing tool “YOU”.

  • When delivering a life, LTC, DI, or P&C policy, ask your client where they keep their "safe" money.
  • Write your clients policy number on the back of your business card. When delivering the policy, tell them to keep the card in an easily accessible place and reference the number on the back when calling you.
  • Create a "401k rollover kit." When you hear of company layoffs, contact the human resources department to offer your services and ask if they would like to receive printed material to have on-hand. *Extra Tip- Leave the BrokerageWorks postcard on "rolling over your retirement plan" in the local unemployment office.
  • Have an appreciation dinner for top clients. Invite an insurance wholesaler to host an informal discussion (the company will usually help pay for this). Don't forget to ask each client to bring a friend.
  • Host and sponsor a party at your client's house. Have them invite 2-6 of their friends for a tea, wine tasting, martini, or food party.
  • Offer free, non-product related seminars at a library or non-profit organization. *Extra tip- For better results, advertise that a local restaurant's food will be served. The restaurant may be willing to donate the food for free advertising.
  • Plan an event for your top clients and their friends. Provide the transportation and go to a casino, tour a museum, or catch a ball game. You will have a captive audience to and from the event.
