What Our Hosts Are Saying
"The Role of NGOs in Promoting Global Women's Issues" delegation

Women in NGO 2In May, 23 women from non-government organizations (NGOs) visited Denver through the International Visitor Leadership Program. These talented women were examining the impact of the non-profit sector in promoting women's political participation, economic opportunities and access to education and health care; as well as partnerships between government and non-governmental organizations in addressing global women's issues.

Of the many IIE volunteers who hosted these women, below is just one example of the impact of the visit exemplified by host Iris Fontera and one of her international guests:

"Shalom to my new friends! It was a pleasure for me too to meet you all. I think that you shared with us so much of yourselfs, and made us feel at home. It was my best experience that I had in Denver." - Written by one of the international visitors to the whole group who was at Iris' home.

"The conversation was terrific.  We learned so much aboutWomen in NGO each other, shared so much, the geographical boundaries disappeared.  The issues we all deal with are the same. Again, thanks so much for giving us the opportunity to meet such wonderful people." - Iris Fontera, IIE Volunteer after hosting some of the visitors for dinner

The group was also invited to a breakfast discussion hosted by former IIE Advisory Board member Pat Cooper.  Current IIE Advisory Board member Laurie Hirschfeld Zeller co-hosted and assembled a panel of Denver professionals who work in the field of women's leadership including representatives from the White House Project, the Latina Initiative, the Blue Flower Fund, and representatives from city and state government, as well as representatives from Colorado political offices.

In small groups, the women discussed topics ranging from how conditions or attitudes related to women's issues have changed over the past ten years, to the balance between family life and work life.

"At my table alone were women from Colorado, Zimbabwe, Sudan and Nepal. Their accomplishments, against tremendous odds, continue to inspire me weeks later. Occasions like these, and the opportunities to share them with my peers in the community, are why I volunteer with IVLP." - Laurie Hirschfeld Zeller, IIE Advisory Board member
