WORLDWIDE DAY OF ACTION - JUNE 21st, 2010
Please LIVE UNITED with United Way communities and supporters around the world by taking action on important EDUCATION, INCOME and HEALTH issues! Here's a menu of ways you can be engaged, on your favorite issue (or ALL of them!) without even having to leave your home: LIVE UNITED on Larry King Live Disaster in the Gulf: How You Can Help Telethon Monday at 8 PM ET On CNN's Larry King Live this Monday, a special 2-hour telethon with celebrity participants will feature United Way as one of three charities in efforts to rebuild the Gulf Coast. Thousands of people have already received United Way help with food, clothing, utility assistance, rent and mortgage relief, and access to health and mental health care. Call into the telethon or go to our Web site to give to the United Way Gulf Recovery Fund to support emergency assistance and long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives by addressing educational, financial and health-related challenges. Celebrity participants include: Chelsea Handler, Sting, Tim McGraw, Kathy Griffin, Alyssa Milano, Deepak Chopra, Pete Wentz, Ted Danson, Robert Redford, Harry Connick Jr., Jenny McCarthy, Melania Trump, Ivanka Trump, Aaron Neville, Kerry Kennedy, James Carville and Mary Matalin, Anderson Cooper, Tyson Ritter, Lenny Kravitz, Ian Somerhalder, Edward James Olmos, Philippe Cousteau and more!! The United Way Gulf Recovery Fund will provide emergency assistance and support long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives by addressing educational, financial and health-related challenges. ADVOCATE FOR EDUCATION In New Jersey: Call your state legislators and ask them to fully fund the Formula in FY2011 and not cut school aid to any district across the state. With one of the highest graduation rates in the country, NJ's continued ability to adequately educate our students is at risk. ADVOCATE FOR INCOME In New Jersey: Preserve the NJ Earned Income Tax Credit Rate. New Jersey's working poor residents will be hit with a 5% reduction in their Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) under the current proposed budget. For a working poor family of four this is a difference of $252-or a month of food- from the previous year. Tell your legislator that NJ most vulnerable families should be able to keep what they've worked hard to earn and that the EITC rate should hold steady at 25%. Federal Level: Thank Senators Lautenberg and Menendez for their support of continuing FMAP and COBRA assistance, and ask them to keep fighting! In these tough economic times, the number of New Jerseyans out-of-work continues to rise as does our budget shortfalls. This is important Federal legislation that helps families and state governments meet. ADVOCATE FOR HEALTH In New Jersey: Fully fund and ensure NJ Family Care coverage for all adult enrollees. Having health Insurance means having affordable access to health care- a basic need for all. Providing coverage means a cost-savings for New Jersey. NJ Family Care for one adult costs nearly 57% less than one (1) visit to the local emergency room, where those who don't have coverage end up seeking care and who's costs are passed on to the insured.
